Woolworths confirms it will no longer sell Tasmanian beef in the state or the mainland from 2027, a move cattle farmers say is a "kick in the guts".

No we will not use AI!

There has been a LOT of discussion on the Sheffield Notice Board of late about small business use of AI. I just wanted to be clear I will never use AI drafted or created content. (For the record I do use Canva to combine images and text for my social media posts but I do not use prompts - I simply type in the text with my fingers and move them around the image).

I feel that many small businesses feel pressured to use AI - that somehow they will fail if they 'don't embrace the change'. This seems to be a message that is also being promoted by our local business organisation KALIBA through their recent communications and events. I do not believe many customers want AI. In my accommodation business I have been told there are lots of things I should do if I want to be successful (generally things that make someone else money like pay for online booking software) I don't use it and amazingly people are lining up to send me an old fashioned email and book! (no one actually believes this is possible) In my opinion its not the fancy bells and whistles that make a business- its authenticity, customer service and quality and consistency of your product.

But this is not just about authenticity or the intellectual property of human creatives or any of that. Even if you are a small business just focused on your bottom line. The rapid introduction of AI is also about your survival. A report from AEMO (Australian Market Energy Operator) the organisation that manages the National Electricity Market, has found that in 10 years current planned data centres will be using as much energy as every home in NSW and Victoria combined* - ie millions and millions of people. In a market based system of supply and demand it will be micro businesses like us and you the consumer who will be paying.

For any local businesses out there wondering will this technology benefit me or my business I would ask the question. Who is making the money and receiving the ultimate benefit and is this ultimately going to help me or my local community? Anyway enough of that - back to growing grass, raising cows and connecting with people.

What a glorious day for a drive in the countryside!! the farm shop will be open this afternoon (Saturday 15 August) from 1pm until at least 3pm (if you are running late send me a DM or just come up the drive if the sign is out!)

The Farm Shop will be open Saturday 8 AND Sunday 9 August. 10.30am - 3pm. Sunday is going to be VERY wet! plenty of time to stock up on Saturday for something to go in the slow cooker on Sunday morning. (unfortunately we have already sold out of mince and premium steaks .... but there are plenty of roasts, ribs, briskets, chuck steak etc)
