🌿 Discover Monument Hill Walking Track – Arakoon National Park 🌊

Looking for a beautiful walk to add to your holiday itinerary? The Monument Hill walking track in Arakoon National Park is a lovely coastal walk offering spectacular views, fresh sea air, fascinating history and plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife.

Starting near historic Trial Bay Gaol, the 1.4 km track winds through coastal heathland and casuarinas before reaching the historic monument on Monument Hill. Keep your eyes and ears open along the way – you may spot kangaroos, native wildlife and cheeky kookaburras enjoying the surrounding bushland. And if you’re visiting during whale season, keep an eye out towards the coast for the chance to spot whales passing by. 🦘🦜🐋

Along the track, you’ll also see beautiful flannel flowers, which were planted by German internees during World War I because they reminded them of the edelweiss flowers of home. 🌼

The stone monument was built by the internees in memory of fellow detainees who sadly passed away while interned at Trial Bay Gaol.

🥾 Walk details:
• 1.4 km one way
• Approximately 30 minutes – 1 hour
• Moderate grade with some short rocky and steeper sections

What a weekend! 🔥🏆

The SHARKSKIN 2026 Australian IRB Championships have wrapped up after four action-packed days of incredible racing at beautiful South West Rocks.

👏 Congratulations to our 2026 Overall Champions:
🏆 Open Champions: Kirra Surf Life Saving Club
🏆 Masters Champions: Caves Beach Surf Lifesaving Club

A huge congratulations to every club, competitor, official and volunteer who made this event such a success. From lightning-fast racing to outstanding teamwork and determination, the standard of competition was nothing short of exceptional.

The final day saw Kirra SLSC continue their dominance, claiming an impressive five of the nine Open titles on offer. With challenging weather approaching, the schedule was condensed to ensure all racing was completed on Saturday—making for an action-packed finish to an unforgettable championship.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the Macleay Valley Coast and helped make this year’s championship such a memorable event. 🌊🚤

🏛️⛓️ Step back in time at Trial Bay Gaol 🌊

Discover one of the Mid North Coast's most fascinating historic sites, where remarkable stories unfold against breathtaking ocean views in Arakoon National Park.

Opened in 1886 after 13 years of construction, Trial Bay Gaol was built to house prisoners tasked with constructing a breakwater to create a safe harbour between Sydney and Brisbane. Although the ambitious project was never completed, you can still see the remains of the breakwater from the guard tower lookout. During World War I, the gaol took on a different role, becoming an internment camp for people of German descent who were detained amid fears that they may have been sympathetic to the enemy.

Today, you can wander the atmospheric ruins, explore the museum, take in spectacular coastal views, or experience the gaol after dark on a captivating Twilight Tour. For those keen to explore further, nearby walking tracks offer even more stunning scenery.
