This is your final warning… the hooks are about to drop. 👀🎣

Tomorrow, the hunt is ON.

Three Golden Hooks🪝will be hidden across our seven towns, with each one worth a $500 fuel voucher.

Here’s how it works:

Find a Golden Hook 🪝 snap a selfie with it, and email your photo to [email protected].

The first person to claim each hook wins the prize.

But be quick… each golden hook can only be claimed once, so once it’s gone, it’s gone. 👀

Seven towns. Three major prizes. One epic hunt.

Are you ready to get hooked?

OPEN LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER

Dear Prime Minister

I write in relation to your “Every little bit helps” advertising campaign launched over the weekend urging Australians to limit their fuel use.

I understand that public life can be a brutal aspiration, as it involves thanklessly weighing up solutions that strike the right balance between solving a problem, while mitigating impacts to others, but this advertising campaign appears to have had absolutely no thought given to mitigating the devastating impacts it will create.

I have been inundated with calls from Balonne residents and business owners who are rightly concerned about the absolute economic devastation this advertising campaign will cause to our regional economy.

In our rural setting, we can’t simply get on public transport, ride a bicycle or rely on electric vehicles to run our agricultural economy and tow caravans, we need an affordable and reliable fuel supply.

Tourism is a vital pillar of our regional economy, generating jobs and sustaining livelihoods, and the last thing it needs is a taxpayer-funded campaign advising travellers to stay away. I urge you to rethink this approach.

In a matter of days, our South West Queensland Councils launched a Fuel Tracker Dashboard, which shows the fuel availability in our region to give travellers information about the available fuel supply and the confidence to travel here.

This Fuel Tracker Dashboard came to fruition with little to no funding, just the ingenuity and commitment of our Council teams who understand how vital tourism is to our region.

I implore you to please follow our lead and develop a National Fuel Tracker Dashboard that allows people to make their own decisions about where and when they choose to travel.

While you’re navigating our Country through this critical time, please spare a thought for the hard-working business owners and tourism operators who have taken a risk on setting up an enterprise that generates flow-on jobs and benefits throughout regional Australia.

Kind Regards

Mayor Samantha O’Toole

BALONNE IS WELCOMING THE START TO TOURIST SEASON

Balonne Shire is open for business and welcoming the start of our tourist season with much-needed water flows passing through our Balonne river system.

With our cotton harvest well underway and a range of events scheduled, there is plenty to see and do in the Balonne Shire.

The current water flow passing through the Balonne river system will cause temporary impacts to local roads, however the State Highway network throughout our Shire remains open for travellers.

Balonne Shire Mayor Samantha O’Toole said the current water flows in our rivers really does create the perfect scenario for our local economy and for travellers through the Shire.

“It’s always an exciting time in the Shire to witness these majestic water flows meander through our beautiful country landscape”, said Mayor O’Toole.

“I would urge travellers and visitors to head to the St George Region and greater Balonne Shire to take in the spectacle of watching our rivers in full flight, as this is occurring without the hindrance of impacts to our State Highway network in the Shire.

“These water flows bring more than just a reinvigoration to the landscape, they also create a hearty sense of joy to our community as well, so it’s a great time for people to visit.

“Our businesses are open, our countryside is about to burst into colour from our native flora and the community is uplifted from the welcomed water supply to the region.

“We are all ready to welcome this season’s visitors to the Shire with open arms, and some good old fashioned country charm.”

Below are a few upcoming events in the Shire for travellers to enjoy:
- Thallon Rail Centre Grand Opening - 28 March
- Dirranbandi Annual Easter Fishing Competition – 4-5 April
- Riversands Easter in the Vines – 4-5 April
- Dirranbandi Show & Campdraft – 10-11 April
- St George Show – 3 May
- Hebel Hotel Speed Shears – 9 May

A huge congratulations to all the crew.
The work you do to promote the St George Region (and us!😉) can not be thanked enough.
Great work team!

The dust has settled, we’re back at our desks, and we’re still beaming like we just won bronze at the Australian Tourism Industry Council Awards… because we did! 🥉✨

It was a true team effort, from Kim’s powerhouse leadership and submission-writing magic to our ever-smiling Senior Tourism Officer Tara, Tourism Officer Kyra, along with casuals Carolyn and Laura, who all play a vital role in keeping our visitor services standards sky high.

And of course, a huge thank you to YOU, our incredible visitors! 🫵 You’re the reason we get to do what we do every day, and this win simply wouldn’t be possible without you. 🧡

Here’s to celebrating, elevating, and showcasing the very best of what the St George Region has to offer😁
