Tinkers Point Walk at Rocky Cape
Look, we’ve been running accommodation in Stanley in North West Tasmania for a 24 years now, and you’d think we’d have explored every walking track within cooee. But last week we finally got around to doing the Tinkers Point walk at Rocky Cape National Park, and honestly, we’ve been kicking ourselves for not doing it sooner.

The Walk Itself
It’s only about 1.5 kilometres return, but there’s a bit of a climb to it. Not Mount Everest or anything – just enough to make you feel like you’ve earned the view at the top. Takes about an hour and a half if you factor in some time at the summit, which you absolutely should.
The track winds up through coastal heathland, and the higher you get, the better the views become. By the time you reach the top, you’re looking at 360-degree views that are genuinely spectacular. Bass Strait stretches out to the north, and on a clear day you can see for miles. Looking back towards the coast, you get this great perspective of Rocky Cape’s headlands and the inland hills.

What to Bring
Decent walking shoes are a must – it’s a bit steep in places. Bring water, and maybe a thermos if you’re like us and enjoy a coffee at the top. A light jacket’s not a bad idea either, even on warmer days. The breeze up there can be fresh, as they say.
The wildflowers were starting to come out when we went, which was a nice bonus. And we spotted some dolphins in the water below, which made Katinka’s day.
Why We’re Mentioning It
When guests stay with us, we’re always getting asked for local recommendations. We’ve got our usual list of favourites, but Tinkers Point is definitely getting added to it. It’s the kind of walk that reminds you why Tasmania’s North West is such a special part of the world – without having to drive for hours or tackle anything too challenging.

If you’re staying at one of our places and fancy a morning out, Rocky Cape is only a short drive away. Do the walk, grab some lunch at Sisters Beach or Boat Harbour on the way back, and you’ve got yourself a pretty decent day out.

We’re still discovering great spots around here after all these years, which is part of what makes living and working in this area so good.

Anyway, worth checking out if you’re in the area. Just don’t leave it as long as we did.
If you’re planning a trip to Tasmania’s North West and need somewhere comfortable to stay, check out our websites or give us a call. Happy to share more local tips.

Another wonderful guest review:
If you want the best vantage point in Stanley, this is it. The Stanley Seaview Inn sits high on the hill, so you get an incredible view over The Nut and the ocean. The highlight for us: It wasn't just the sea views—we loved that there were sheep grazing in the paddock right next to the hotel! It felt so peaceful and authentically Tasmanian to wake up to green fields and the ocean at the same time. Rooms were clean, comfortable, and the location is perfect for a relaxing stay.

The Story of The Nut: Stanley’s Iconic Landmark

Rising 143 metres above the coastline, The Nut is one of Tasmania’s most recognisable natural landmarks, and the proud backdrop to Stanley. Its perfectly flat top, dramatic cliffs and sweeping views make it the centrepiece of the town, but its story stretches back millions of years.

The Nut is the remains of a volcanic plug, formed around 13 million years ago. Molten magma cooled and solidified inside an ancient volcano, creating the hard rock that resisted erosion while the surrounding landscape wore away. What’s left today is a steep sided tabletop formation that feels almost otherworldly.

Long before European arrival, the area was part of the traditional land of the North-West Tasmanian Aboriginal people. The indigenous name often associated with the area is Munatrik. There’s no single confirmed origin for the nickname ‘The Nut’ but there are a couple of widely shared theories. Some believe it is a shortened version of its Aboriginal name, or that it was a “hard nut to crack” because explosives were unable to dent it. Whatever the true origin, the name stuck.

What to know before you go:
- You can walk or ride to the top.
- The summit walk is a spectacular 2km circuit track.
- Wildlife is everywhere - wallabies, pademelons and birds.
- The weather can change quickly – bring a jacket and wear good walking shoes.
- It’s perfect for photography.

Whether you’re a history lover, a hiker, a photographer, or simply someone who appreciates natural beauty, The Nut is an experience you won’t forget. Its ancient story, dramatic shape and breathtaking views make it the heart of Stanley – one that continues to draw visitors year after year.

Fairy Penguins in Stanley

Staying at Stanley Seaview Inn, Horizon Deluxe Apartments or Rose’s Villa? You’re just moments away from one of Tasmania’s most magical wildlife encounters – watching fairy penguins waddle ashore at dusk.

These tiny birds stand only 33cm tall and return to Stanley’s shores each evening after a day of fishing. Seeing them shuffle up the sand is a heartwarming and unforgettable sight.

Our penguins can be seen at the Godfreys Beach Penguin Viewing Platform. This uses red lighting to protect the penguins, and is the best spot in town for close, respectful viewing. The platform is also wheelchair and pram accessible. The peak season is September to March, when more penguins are active and returning to their burrows.

Our tips to ensure the best experience:
- Arrive a little before dusk.
- Dress warmly, it can be chilly so close to the sea!
- No flash photography, bright lights or loud voices.
- Stay on designated paths.
- Keep a respectful distance from any penguins.

If you would like to take home a little reminder of your penguin encounter, pop into reception to purchase one of our adorable penguin stuffed animals.

The Heart Behind Stanley Accommodation Group❤️

When you stay with Stanley Accommodation Group, you’re not just booking a room, you’re stepping into a story shaped by family, history, and a deep love for this little coastal town. What began as one woman’s vision in the 1990s has grown into a thriving, multi-property accommodation group run with passion, care, are a genuine commitment to guests and community.

The family’s connection to tourism started when their mother, Rose, established Rosebank Cottages in the early 90s alongside her husband Geoff. Years later, while her son, Clint, and wife Katinka, were busy running an eco-tour business in Launceston and Hobart, a simple conversation sparked an unexpected opportunity. During a visit home, they learned that the lease for what was then Dovecote Homestead & Stanley Motel was available. Originally, there was no intention to get involved. However, after the idea was mentioned over a family dinner, everything changed. Two months later, Rose and Geoff arrived with a proposal: a partnership to purchase the motel, with Clint and Katinka taking on management. And just like that, Stanley Accommodation Group began its journey.

After leasing ‘Dovecote’ for three years, the family purchased and renamed it Stanley Seaview Inn – a name that better reflects its stunning outlook across the coastline. Over the years, the group has expanded, introducing Horizon Deluxe Apartments in 2008, and Rose’s Villa in 2024, named in honour of the family’s beloved mother Rose, who passed in 2022.

One of the most charming pieces of Stanley Seaview Inn’s story, is that Clint and Katinka lived in what is now room 26 for 21 years, raising their two children, and incorporating rooms 10 and 11 as bedrooms. When the children moved out and the family purchased Hanlon Guest House, those rooms returned to guest use.

Being family-owned influences everything about how Stanley Accommodation Group operates. The family places great importance on ensuring employees feel valued, creating a warm and welcoming environment that passes on to guests and their experience.

After more than two decades, one thing remains especially meaningful: hearing guests rave about their stay. Those glowing comments never lose their impact. The team strives to ensure every stay exceeds expectations, from the pristine presentation of rooms to the property’s thoughtful touches. Creating a business where staff enjoy working, guests feel genuinely welcomed, and the local economy benefits has been the greatest reward for the owners.

The future holds exciting possibilities, including the potential for three additional Rose’s Villa sites, alongside the meticulous upkeep of a 40-year-old inn and its grounds. Stanley Accommodation Group is more than a business; it’s a family legacy. Built with heart, hard work and a deep connection to the local community, it continues to grow while remaining true to its roots.

Every guest who stays becomes a part of the story.
