The koala is our wildlife mama of the day and is unique like the others we have featured! A young koala only drinks its mother's milk for the first six to seven months and remains in the pouch for that time, slowly growing and developing eyes, ears and fur. 🐨
You can contribute to our work with koalas on Millowl (Phillip Island) by adopting a koala from the Penguin Foundation which makes a great Mother's Day gift. ❤️

We are celebrating the last animal in our wildlife mums series - the Short-tailed shearwater who are migrating north to Alaska from Phillip Island right now. Shearwaters are one of those creatures who have a rather laissez-faire approach to mothering, after the female lays one large white egg (85g) the incubation period lasts roughly 52 days. The parents fly to the waters of Antarctica to forage after the chick has hatched, and eventually begin their migration north with the aid of strong winds, leaving behind a chick still covered with brown down. The chicks soon follow once they have grown their adult feathers.

We were lucky to have the community come together to see these seabirds depart safely over the last few weeks.
Make your Mum a a shearwater guardian by gifting her an adoption through our Penguin Foundation. ❤️

From the mass amounts of penguin feathers blowing in the breeze, you can no doubt tell that we are very much in the moulting period. Moult is a non-negotiable part of the annual cycle for a penguin - not every penguin breeds every year but every penguin (except for new fledglings) has to moult. Although many do complete their moult in a burrow, they're not stuck to any particular one like they are while they are breeding. In fact, moulters can move around quite a bit at night and it's not uncommon to see groups of penguins underneath boardwalks like these ones! 🐧🐧 Check it out for yourself, get your tickets here https://bit.ly/3RvCvgd

In early winter, whales will be starting to be sighted along the Bass Coast. Humpback whales will be on their way north to warmer waters, Killer whales will be on the move hunting for prey, while Southern Right whales will stay near the southern coast of Australia.

🐳But where are the whales now?

The summer months are their main feeding time for the larger whale species; they need to get most of their fat built up now to last the long migration period, during which they hardly feed. Krill is what they are mainly feasting on, and it's found in the antarctic and sub-antarctic waters of the southern ocean. Where the whales feed, they also poo! And interestingly that is what goes back into the food chain to produce more plankton and krill for the whales!
