How do you know you’ve met Mr or Mrs Right? Perhaps it’s not a matter of finding the ‘right person’?

We all marry people for reasons that don’t really pan out over the long haul — and that's ok. Christine Carter provides three ways to embrace the reality of an imperfect partner.

Danny and I have been watching Married at First Sight. We decided to have a look because we were curious about how the experiment was run and what the experts would say to the people walking the relationship path. For us, who don't watch a lot of reality TV, viewing has been an 'interesting' experience.

While there is a lot to talk about, one of the most striking things we noticed was no matter how helpful the relationship advice, particular areas weren't addressed. Of course, it could be the producers chose not to show areas of personal awareness and growth however, the fact remains, many of the participants could have benefited from a little more understanding of their own motivations and frustrations and how these motivations and frustrations impact their behaviours.

Danny and I work in the area of positive psychology and strengths. We believe each person has within them the tools to be effective and happy in a relationship. However in order to be comfortable with others, you first need to be comfortable with yourself. We would have loved the chance to offer a Strengths Profile and Relationship Map to each contestants and give them a clear, tangible vision of their relationship path. Of course, a map is not a reality - it is an impression of a reality. However with it a couple can see not only their own perspective, but also the view their partner sees. I wonder how knowing each others actions were reflections of particular thought and emotion patterns could have improved the communication process and perhaps brought greater success to the relationship?

Find answers | Find Direction | Find Peace

When you join us on a ‘Relationships in Paradise Retreat’, you and your partner will develop the skills of successful couples. Our unique approach combines mindfulness, narrative and strengths to help couples focus on what is working for them.

We know what is’s like to love each other deeply and yet feel disconnected or misunderstood. We have had our share of ups and downs, our spats, our fights and even questioned if we were supposed to be together. However with commitment to ourselves and each other, we learnt to listen to each other. We built a relationship strengthened by effective communication and awareness of each others needs and contributions. We would like to help you do the same.

Discover how to build a relationship of trust, commitment and harmony. Learn each other’s strengths and recognise what you can do to re-create balance, boundaries and a sense of self within a loving relationship. When you become an interdependent couple, you can stop those anguishing emotions sending you in spiralling circles.
