*** TOP TIP ***
TRAINING OR COMPETING IN THE HEAT
➡ If you are riding or competing in the hot weather, wet your horse all over before you start warming up. This will keep your cooler and will also mean they don't sweat as much.
➡ You should also stop to re-wet your horse after say 10-15 min.
➡ You should also re-wet your horse before starting to compete e.g. especially in longer duration events such as endurance or cross-country.
➡ The best indicator of how hot your horse is is their breathing. Hard-blowing = high temperature.
➡ For cooling after exercise the rule is as much water on until your horse's breathing starts to return to normal. Use buckets or hoses. Use ice to cool the water if available. Don't waste time stopping to scrape - it only slows down cooling.
