| Hospitality payment costs 💳

Card surcharges have ended. Processing fees haven't.

Since 1 October, hospitality venues can no longer add separate surcharges to EFTPOS, Visa or Mastercard payments.

Your payment provider still charges processing fees, so those costs haven’t disappeared.

So what’s changed with the ATO?

The ATO had planned to stop accepting direct credit card payments from 30 November 2026. After businesses pushed back, the government agreed to cover the processing costs until 30 June 2027.

That means you can continue paying tax directly by credit card until then without an ATO surcharge.

For your venue, there are two takeaways:

✅ You still pay the fees when customers pay by card.
✅ You can still use a credit card to pay your tax bill until 30 June 2027.

| Commercial dishwashers

A commercial dishwasher can cost less to buy but more to run.

Sydney Water’s business water costs rose 7.6% in July, so even small differences in water use can add up in a busy kitchen.

Compare water and energy use per rack to see whether lower running costs could justify a higher purchase price.

Capacity matters too. Check how many racks it can wash per hour so staff aren’t left waiting for clean dishes during service.

Two fitout quotes can cover very different jobs, even when the total looks similar.

For a bar, look closely at what's included behind the counter: plumbing, drainage, glass washing, refrigeration and power.

For a restaurant, check the kitchen scope. Extraction, gas, grease management and fire protection can change the cost considerably.

For a hotel, check the cost per room and how the work will be staged. A small difference per room adds up, and rooms taken out of service affect revenue.

Ask each provider to break down what's included, so you can easily see what you're paying for and what's still missing.

Hospitality equipment has to earn its place.

Award minimum wages rose 4.75% from July. Road freight transport prices climbed 15.5% in the June quarter, while the cash rate held at 4.35% in August.

For a venue replacing an oven, fridge or dishwasher, those costs sit around the purchase: getting the machine on site, paying for it, and staffing the service it needs to handle.

That puts more weight on how equipment performs once it is installed. A dishwasher needs to keep up with the rush. An oven needs to handle the menu and volume. A fridge draws power every day it runs.

Inflation has eased. So why are costs still so high?

The latest ABS figures show headline inflation fell from 4.0% to 3.8% in the year to June. Headline inflation tracks price changes across a broad range of goods and services, including costs that can move sharply, such as fuel.

Lower fuel prices helped bring the headline figure down. But underlying inflation, which removes larger short-term price movements to show the broader trend, remained at 3.6%.

In simple terms: prices are still rising, just more slowly.

For hospitality operators, wages, ingredients and utilities remain expensive. While these costs can be difficult to control, the right cleaning equipment can help venues:
