A message from thee Sowter’s family:

We are deeply saddened to share the news that our beloved Mum and Wife, Ania Sowter, passed away peacefully on Feb 9th 2025. She was surrounded by what mattered most - her family.

Ania was a visionary - she wanted to share her piece of Poland with Australia, and in 2017, alongside her loving husband Phil, were recipients of the Order for Merit of the Republic of Poland and the Decoration of Honor Meritorious for Polish Culture.

She was proud of everything she achieved, and every challenge was met with resilience and her approach was to never give up.

It is thanks to The Polish Place, that we made so many wonderful friends for life. I’m sure the birds will continue singing in her honor.

*END OF AN ERA*

After 41 years, we have handed over the ownership of The Polish Place to new owners…

A very bittersweet moment for us as the Sowter family. We created our “little piece of Poland” back in 1983, built a Polish restaurant famous for its Roast Duck with Cherries, and created Tamborine Mountain’s first fully self contained accommodation. We enjoyed every minute.

No fire could destroy our spirits - we rebuilt our premises after a big fire in 2016. We enjoyed working hard to host so many thousands of guests over 41 years, many who have become great personal friends.

It’s now time for us to leave and hand the baton over.

THANKYOU to our guests, suppliers, friends and family for helping us make The Polish Place what it meant to so many.

We have been inundated with messages of love & support, and visited by so many guests who shared tears & memories and just want one last Polish meal with us.

We have prepared a record number of Roast Ducks, Pork Hock and Pierogi over the last week - and look forward to smashing more records this weekend!

We are open from 10am each day, and right through to the early evening on Friday and Saturday. We are unable to take any further bookings but please come along and we hope to accommodate you.

After 40 years of trading, we have made the very difficult decision to close The Polish Place Restaurant on Tamborine Mountain from September 4, 2023.

Our family-owned business started as a coffee shop in 1983 and quickly expanded to a Polish restaurant, with 5 self-contained Cottages and Gallery. Over 40 years, we have met thousands of guests and employed at least 400 local staff. Everyone has a story about The Polish Place - whether they enjoyed a Polish meal and vodka, whilst taking in our views, sunsets and birdlife. More importantly, they experienced a little bit of Poland in Australia.

Despite a fire destroying our restaurant and home in 2016, it was with the local community support we were able to rebuild, and reopen the Restaurant. We have been humbled to receive many awards over the years, including “Best Specialty Restaurant” on the Gold Coast in 2020 and “Best European Restaurant” 3 years running by the Restaurant & Caterer’s Association.

Our proudest achievement was the opportunity to grow our business and raise our family within. Who knows what's around the corner, but we want to thank you for your patronage, your stories and repeated visits.

Although our restaurant will be closing, our accommodation will continue, offering guests a wonderfully unique experience as we always have.

So for the next few weeks, come and enjoy what we have to offer – whether it’s our famous roast duck for two, or vodka and cake. Whilst this decision was not taken lightly, we are looking forward to our next chapter.

We first opened 3rd September 1983. It’s only befitting we celebrate 40 years to the day,
and close at sunset on the 3rd September, 2023.
