Yesterday morning I was checking Cupid’s Cottage prior to guest arrival, making sure everything was perfect. I could hear ‘tap, tap, tap’ on the window.

To my great surprise, this beautiful blue wren was having an argument with his own reflection! We’ve worked hard over the last 13 years revegetating all of our non-vineyard areas with Barossa natives. The huge increase in native bird life has been very rewarding, especially when I see one of these little guys. It makes my day!

Great start to winter this week. 38.5mm rainfall. Weather stations are a great modern weather tool on a farm, recording accurate realtime weather conditions.

We usually don’t see much run-off into our dams in June, especially after a dry summer and Autumn, the ground soaks up the rain. What it does mean though is a build up of deep moisture, slowly water logging the ground. Once the soil profile approaches moisture holding capacity, water will begin to flow. In a normal year we will see this in late July and August. Fingers crossed it keeps raining like it’s meant to 🌧️🤞.

Recently, during the April school holidays, we travelled to South Australia’s beautiful Flinders Ranges with our caravan. We love it up there. It gives us a true sense of how incredibly ancient and timeless our great southern land is and connects us with the indigenous and early pioneering settler history of South Australia.

Travel and exploration is an important part of our lives. We attribute our love for travel to our pioneer heritage, both being direct descendants of 1839 South Australian pioneer farming settlers. It’s in our blood, as the saying goes. Both of us have travelled extensively overseas (pre-kids!!), and there are very few places in Australia we haven’t been to. We love taking our kids on epic road trips and Reggie sure is a well travelled dog!

When our guests stay with us, we know they have a love of travel also. We get it. We know what you’re looking for, what you need during your stay, and that you’ll appreciate local advice from us about what to see and do while you’re here at Stonewell. Winter in the Barossa.

The lake is low this year. The vines are bare. The land is quiet after the season has finished its work. The harvesters have long gone. The rows are still. There is a different kind of calm here now, and it is worth coming for.

The wood is cut and the fires are set. Cold mornings, slow breakfasts, nowhere to be.
