A recent group of seven friends chose Whiterocks for a three-night Barossa getaway, and their review captures much of what we aim to offer: a clean, comfortable and private home in central Tanunda, with cafés, restaurants and the town centre all within easy walking distance.

They awarded Whiterocks five stars across every category, including cleanliness, accuracy, location and value.

A wonderful piece of Barossa history, and one that brought back many boyhood memories for me.

This very detailed video tells the story of the Penrice Stone Train, which for more than 60 years carried stone from the Penrice quarry near Angaston down the Barossa railway line through Nuriootpa, Tanunda and beyond.

Growing up in Angaston, I knew this railway and the Penrice end of the line very well. Even some of the railwaymen mentioned in the commentary, including the surnames Searl and Holmes, are familiar old local names. I can’t help wondering whether some of those drivers might also have called into my parents’ pub in Angaston for a beer or a stout during their time in the district.

There is also a direct connection with Whiterocks.

The Penrice quarry was not only a source of limestone. It also produced the distinctive white marble stone once commonly seen around Barossa gardens. The garden borders at Whiterocks contain that Penrice white marble, and crushed white marble was used on the pathways.

That is where the name Whiterocks came from.

So this isn’t simply a fascinating railway documentary for us. It tells part of the story of the landscape, industry and people of the Barossa, and even a small part of the history behind our own name.

For anyone who remembers trains running through Angaston, Nuriootpa and Tanunda, this is well worth watching.

Every year this brings back great memories. Some years ago I took my 1954 Chevrolet truck to the Barossa Cruise On and had a wonderful weekend.

One of the highlights wasn’t just the cars, it was the people. Time and again someone would stop, smile and say, “My dad had one of these on the farm,” or “My Pop drove a truck just like this.” Hearing those stories made the truck more than just an old vehicle; it became a trigger for memories and conversations spanning generations.

More exciting developments are underway in Tanunda.

The proposed Tanunda Central Market development on Murray Street, right at the end of Julius Street, is set to bring boutique retail, fresh food outlets, cafés, restaurants and a bar to the heart of town as part of a $2.5 million investment. Plans include a pedestrian mall linking the precinct and additional parking.

For guests staying at Whiterocks, it’s another example of why Tanunda continues to evolve as one of South Australia’s premier regional destinations. Better yet, this new precinct will be only about an 8 minute stroll from Whiterocks.

Council and private investors continue to back the future of the Barossa, creating more reasons for visitors to stay longer and explore everything the region has to offer.

Great to see continued investment in visitor experiences and community facilities across the Barossa.

Construction is now underway on the new Barossa Creative Industries Centre in Tanunda, a major project that will expand the region’s cultural, arts and heritage offerings. The development will create a new cultural hub incorporating gallery, performance, education and community spaces in the heart of Tanunda, with completion expected in late 2026.

Best of all for our guests, this exciting new attraction will be just a 10-minute walk from Whiterocks, adding another reason to leave the car behind and explore Tanunda on foot.

Alongside the Barossa’s world-renowned food, wine and landscapes, investments like this help create even more reasons for visitors to stay longer and discover everything the region has to offer.

A good news story for Tanunda, the Barossa and everyone involved in regional tourism.

Congratulations to Tanunda on being named South Australia’s Top Tourism Town. This recognition reflects the hard work of local businesses, tourism operators, wineries, restaurants, accommodation providers, volunteers and the wider community who help make the Barossa such a special destination.

Just around the corner from Whiterocks is the wonderful Apex Bakery, a traditional Barossa bakery with more than 100 years of history.

There’s something about the smell of fresh bread straight from a wood fired oven that instantly slows you down and makes you feel on holiday.

One of our favourite simple pleasures in Tanunda is an early morning walk to pick up a fresh loaf, still warm from the oven, then back to Whiterocks for coffee and a relaxed breakfast by the fire or out on the veranda depending on the season
