From Broken to Barefoot Again 🐴

A great reminder that not every horse that ends up in shoes needs to stay in shoes.

This horse presented with significant hoof wall separation, cracking and loss of structural integrity. The feet had reached the point where they could no longer comfortably support themselves barefoot, so therapeutic shoeing was used to stabilise the hoof capsule, protect the damaged wall and allow healthy growth to come down.

Over time, with consistent farrier care, correct trimming, protection where needed, and a lot of patience, the hoof quality improved dramatically. The cracks grew out, the wall strengthened, and the feet regained the integrity needed to function without mechanical support.

Today this horse is back barefoot and maintaining sound, healthy feet.

The goal isn’t “barefoot” or “shod” the goal is a comfortable, functional horse. Sometimes that means shoes, sometimes it doesn’t. Good hoof care is about giving the horse what it needs at the time, not forcing a philosophy.🐴

This 3-month-old foal was suffering from contracted tendons, making it difficult for her to stand and move correctly. The owners had been advised that, due to her age, there wasn’t a lot that could be done and that injections were unlikely to make a significant difference.

With a careful, balanced corrective trim aimed at improving hoof balance and encouraging a more natural stance, she’s made some fantastic progress over the past 5 weeks. These before and after photos show the improvement so far.

Corrective farriery isn’t an overnight fix, but with the right approach, regular maintenance, and patience, positive changes can often be achieved. She’s now due for her next visit, and I’m looking forward to helping her continue on the right track. 🐴🔨😊

The life of a farrier, even the bad days are still good days. The reward of helping every horse perform at its best, stay sound, and move comfortably makes all the hard work worth it. There’s nothing better than seeing the difference you can make through skill, dedication, and a genuine love for the trade. 🐴🔨🍻 turn sound on video.
