We Are Not Powerless tells the story of what happens when people refuse to give up on each other. The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the Directors - Muzafar Ali and Jolyon Hoff.

Ten years ago Australia ‘stopped the boats’. At the same time a small group of refugees in Indonesia received a $200 donation and started a two-room school. Husband and wife, Muzafar Ali and Nagina Zahra, were co-founders of that first school before being resettled in Adelaide in 2015. Since then, the schools in Indonesia have grown. There are now over 1300 refugee students and 130 refugee teachers.

They started with a few notebooks and pens and against the advice of the UNHCR. Now the students are obtaining school leaving certificates and entering universities around the world. Alumni from the schools have spoken at the United Nations and become doctors, teachers and lawyers, and they are returning to support the schools in Indonesia, where many went to school for the first time in their lives.

This incredible story places a small refugee community at the centre of some of the biggest and most important geopolitical and immigration debates in the world.

This powerful, emotional and decades-long narrative, anchored by Muzafar and Nagina’s love story, takes the audience inside the life of a refugee in a way that has never been captured before. It highlights the effects of Australia and the world’s approach to refugees and proves that love, connection and community can change the world.

COMING UP NEXT MONTH // GERT is a powerful multimedia performance that weaves spoken word, music and visuals into a haunting journey. Artist Jacqui Malins presents a mesmerising, time-bending experience, that brings the one woman's story to life through the voice of a river.

Tickets at www.headlandtheatre.com.au

In 1924, near Queenstown on the west coast of Lutruwita/Tasmania, a boy holds a gun with a black cockatoo perched on the barrel. A young woman with short curly hair stands beside him in the button grass, a cockatoo dangling from each hand.

Captivated by this arresting image, spoken word performer and artist Jacqui Malins wanted to know: who is this woman, and what is she doing?

GERT is her answer: part history, part poetic investigation, with spoken word, visuals and music. Jacqui transports you through the deep history of ancient Lutruwita/Tasmania and the vibrant community and boom-and-bust rhythms of the west coast - a world of rivers and rainforest, loggers and miners, smelters and dams. This 1-hour one-woman multimedia performance is adapted from her non-fiction narrative poetry collection of the same name.

GERT tells two inseparable stories: one of a place, and the other of one woman who lived there. It speaks to anyone interested in history, women’s lives, industrial history or the environment. It is resonant with communities who are grappling with the legacies of mining, smelting and logging, and looking to a different future.

GERT is layered and beguiling in all the right ways. Just when you think you know where you are, Malins shifts, like the ancient river at the heart of the story, injecting surprise and delight, and interlacing local history with ecology and art.

The evening will be hosted by Gabrielle Journey Jones and include readings by Sandra Renew and Elizabeth Walton.

Supported by Ocean Mic Poets.

TOMORROW! Two sessions to choose from - 11am or 5pm! Tickets are moving fast 🔥.

The definitive account of Erin Patterson and the mushroom murder trial that enthralled the world.

Duncan will be in conversation with Josh Becker for the 11:00am session and Eddie Williams for the 5:00pm session - both from ABC South East.

Tickets at www.headlandtheatre.com.au

Only now is the true callousness of Erin Patterson being revealed. And Duncan McNab reveals all about the case.

These are the facts:

On 29 July 2023 in Leongatha, a small town in rural Victoria, family and friends of local woman Erin Patterson sat down for Saturday lunch. On the menu, Beef Wellington. The next day, four of the guests were hospitalised. Within a week, three of them were dead. When Erin Patterson was arrested and charged with three counts of murder and five of attempted murder, the case captured media attention around the world. A jury of her peers have now decided that Erin Patterson deliberately poisoned her estranged husband’s parents, aunt and uncle. The lunch was a recipe for murder. Her crocodile tears and feigned illness did not fool the police or the jury.

But was this the first time Erin Patterson tried to poison someone she loved? And how did she prepare? Patterson’s cruelty in watching four people who had been nothing but kind and loving to her eat a meal she knew would kill them was the ultimate act of betrayal.

Bestselling author, investigative journalist and former detective, Duncan McNab has sifted through the evidence and attended the nine-week trial to explain in gripping detail the sequence of events that left Gail Patterson, Don Patterson and Heather Wilkinson dead and Ian Wilkinson fighting to survive. With forensic detail he shows how the lethal plot unfolded and reveals the many ways Patterson followed through with no pity for her victims. He delivers an explosive book that gives us the whole, cold, calculating story.
