Safety Campfires

Safety Campfires The Safety Campfire Project was created to figure out whether an artificial and safe campfire could be built, and if it could would anyone want one?:)

Have you been camping this long weekend? Make sure you extinguish your campfire before you leave! 🏕️🔥

Earlier this week, Erica & District Fire Brigade were called to an unattended campfire at a local campground. Thankfully, crews were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread.

Always put your campfire out with water, not soil, and ensure the ashes are cool to the touch before you leave 🚗

🔥31 unattended campfires found by Forest Fire Management Victoria just this week alone🔥

Please remember to properly extinguish your campfire when your not actively watching it. Even if you’re just ducking down to the river to cool off.

Consider if it’s hot do you even need a campfire? This is the premise for our Safety Campfire idea. To have to ambience of a campfire without the heat or danger.

Stay safe Camper’s and have a great new year.

🔥Hey Campers🔥

We want to say a big thank you to all of you who messaged us with support. We ended up finding over 10 homes for the baby Lorikeet.

Luckily overnight though a professional wildlife rescuer stepped in, so the ‘little chonker’ is in the best hands possible and may also be able to be released safely back into the wild where he/she belongs.

We’d like to give a shout out to a four honorables who went the extra mile in helping out!

🔥ATTENTION ALL CAMPERS!🔥

Travis here,

A friend had a baby Rainbow Lorikeet blow into their backyard today in the crazy weather. They’ve done the ‘ring around’ and it looks like all they can do now is take it to the Vet and that will probably mean it will be put to sleep.

It looks to be about 5 weeks old and healthy, so that would mean another 4 or so weeks of hand rearing before it would be a grown bird.

I’ve got an incubator and know how to hand rear the little chicken, but can’t give it a home long term.

If any of you guys would adopt him/her after or during rearing, I might be able to give the rescue a go. Sad as it may be, a hand reared bird would have little chance in the wild afterwards. It would need a people home.

let me know ASAP if you or anyone you know could adopt him/her, and please forward this post to anyone you know that might be able to help. Were near Melbourne in Victoria, Australia.

We here at Safety Campfires are all about Bushfire Prevention, but we are also all about baby birds:)

🔥Hey Campers🔥, Travis here,

Before the COVID Lockdowns took effect last week I learned of a Safety Campfires Follower’s mini-tragedy.

The Follower and her Daughter Abby were supposed to go camping over the coming weekend. The Lockdown unfortunately put an end to this. So, Abby was going to miss out on the camping experience and was super sad about it… and then I was all like:

“NOT ON MY WATCH!”

Imagine me abruptly standing up, looking off into the distance, chest out, wide stance, hands on my hips, maybe with a Michael Bay style, rotating low angle camera shot, with the Australian flag waving triumphantly behind me…

It turned out Abby’s family lived not too far away. So managed to get the first of the fully functional Mark VI Prototypes to them just in time for her Mum to surprise her with a ‘bedroom camping trip’ at home.

Abby’s smile says it all…

I’d also like to give a Safety Campfires “Well done” to her Mum for the creative home camping solution!

🔥Hey Campers🔥, Travis here,

I’m kind of into dinosaurs and human pre-history, and was reminded again tonight by YouTube, that humans (or at least our ancestors, Homo Erectus) have had “controlled use” of fire for over 1 Million years now, maybe longer…

So. “controlled fire” pre-supposes the very first “uncontrolled fire”, from a previously controlled one. This would have happened around that time. The very first human made bushfire/wildfire.

To this day, humans are still the leading cause of bushfires. A million year relationship with fire is a hard one to quit cold turkey. That is why we’re working hard on a campfire alternative. Just for times when the real deal is too risky.

I like to think Grunk got things back under control and was allowed back in the cave that night…

🔥Hey Campers🔥, Travis here,

Crazy week following ANZAC Day,,,

We were back at the Dawn Service, but have been too damn busy to post on what we did:) Which is upon reflection is very un-ANZAC in spirit…

But then my spirits were lifted!

Last week, my oldest son Liam h elped out on ANZAC Day. I’ll post on how substantially later…

Anyway, tonight, after it all, he shows me this drawing he did afterwards…

If you look at it carefully you’ll notice how much he gets what the whole trench warfare thing was about.

Very proud of you Liam.

🔥Hey Campers🔥, Travis here,

So I came home the other day to find the Avocado Tree untouched, but the bottom leaves of my Rubber Tree Seedling all chewed up?!

Now after my discussion with Jake after the Avocado Tree incident, it would be impossible for the “good boy” to have done it. So what did?

After a bit of research I found the only animal on the planet that eats Rubber Tree Seedlings is the Tamkbaqui, a meter long, 100kg fish from South America.

Crazy as it might seem, a giant Tambaqui presumably swam over 13,500 kilometres across the open ocean, traveled up stormwater pipes or something, jumped my back fence and ate the leaves! Then got back out completely undetected.

It must have constructed a series of breathing apparatus with Kelp. Able to trap certain amounts of oxygen. lt wouldn’t last days at a time, but an hour, hour 45, no problem. That gave it enough time to figure out where I lived, go back to the sea, get more oxygen, and then stalk my Rubber Tree Seedling…
