Prior to European settlement, the area in which Belmont is located was once Pink Gum (Eucalyptus fasciculosa) heathy woodland. The Ngarrindjeri were the First Nations people that called this area home. This collection of amazing old photos show Seaview Road in the 1800’s as the area was being developed, with some photos showing areas of Pink Gum woodland prior to clearance. Following a change in ownership of Belmont in 2003, underground rainwater tanks, an overflow frog pond and decking were installed in the backyard. When digging the hole for the rainwater tanks and frog pond, an old rubbish dump was uncovered. The discovery of a variety of old bottles meant that an excavation of the dump was undertaken to look for treasures. These are some of the interesting things found.

Ring-tailed Possums are resident in the gum trees of Belmont. The white belly fur and white tail tip are key features of this possum. The Brush-tailed Possum is also resident in the trees but this species has a black tail and brownish belly colouration.

Grub’s up at “Belmont”!

During the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, Belmont operated as a dining venue that also appears to be referred to as “Frank and Trudy’s place”. The venue was operated by Frank and Gertrude Jeanette (Trudy) Leideritz. From newspaper advertisements, it looks like an Art Gallery was also run from the property.
