It's SA History Festival month, and we're sharing moments from Adare's history.

Adare belonged to the Cudmore family from 1893 to 1942.

This photo shows Mary Cudmore standing at the front of Adare House on her wedding day. In the next image, you can see what the entrance to Adare looks like today.

We're sharing moments from the history of Adare during South Australia's History Festival in May.

When Adare mansion was built by the Cudmore family, its interior was tastefully furnished. The fireplace mantle, as well as much of the timber for the house, was imported from England.

Miss Minnie Cudmore hand painted floral designs on the panels of the bedroom doors. In the small tower, Mr Cudmore kept a museum of stuffed birds and shells.

As in many older Victor Harbor buildings, seaweed was placed in the ceiling for insulation.

South Australia's History Festival is here, so we wanted to share a little about the history of Adare.

According to a local Ramindjeri Dreamtime story, the hill where Adare stands represents an ancestral being who was turned into a whale.

In 1837, Governor Hindmarsh bought several sections of land at Encounter Bay and built a cottage on the side of the hill.

Wealthy pastoralists Daniel and Martha Cudmore purchased the property in 1891. They engaged an architect to design elaborate extensions to the original Hindmarsh Cottage. The new mansion was named Adare, after the Cudmores' home in Ireland.

Adare was later bought by the Methodist Church in 1954.

Today, the Uniting Church in SA marks ANZAC Day.

โ€œANZAC Day is not only about memory, but about formation. As we honour those who served, we are called anew to be people who seek peace, embody compassion, and remain attentive to Godโ€™s presence, especially in a troubled world.โ€
