The Peninsula is home to the Emmi, Mendhi and Batjamalh language groups. The name ‘Wagait’ comes from the Wadjiginy saltwater people who describe themselves as ‘wagatj’ or beach dwellers and comes from the Batjamalh word wagatj for beach. Cox Peninsula played an important role in the defence of Darwin in WWll. The remains of gun emplacements, communication towers, the western side of the anti-submarine boom net and plane wrecks feature across the Peninsula. Wagait Beach Bush Retreat and Coxy’s Retreat provide the perfect base for your stay at Wagait Beach. Fish from Mandorah Jetty or bring the boat to venture further afield. Mandorah Jetty is one of the few deep sea land based fishing options available to fishos in the NT.
