Well, there's next year......

Hey laneway folk,
We wanted you to follow us in 2020 to celebrate Lost Lanes in Wagga Wagga. But, adhering to social distancing and government regulations makes this a little difficult. So, we’re here to officially break it to you - Lost Lanes, 20 June, 2020, won’t be proceeding.
Although you won’t be busting out your beanie and the fire buckets won’t be lit, rest assure that we are working on ‘Plan B’. And, although we don’t know exactly what that looks like just yet, we do know that through this adversity so much creativity has surfaced – and this will be the case for our Lost Lanes planning.
Stay tuned for more announcements. Stay safe and see you down the laneway soon!

🦊 INVASIVE SPECIES COUNCIL CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION AGAINST PEST SPECIES 🦊

The Invasive Species Council says urgent action against feral animals and weeds is the only way to protect Australian wildlife from the impacts of catastrophic bushfires.

Spokesman Andrew Cox says native wildlife in fire hit areas are very vulnerable to predators.

He says restoring damaged and lost habitat is critical but will be painfully slow and in many cases impossible without action against pest species.

"We should be rolling out an expanded fox and feral cat program," he says.

"We should be focusing on those hard hooved feral animals - horses, deer goats and pigs, whether it's ground shooting, aerial shooting and trapping.

"And we also should make sure weeds are dealt with, that will be how we avert a native wildlife crisis."

The state government has been air-dropping food to rock wallabies in burnt out areas near Sydney.

But Mr Cox says efforts to save wildlife will fail unless tackling ferals is a major part of the disaster recovery.

"We probably need to be accelerating and putting in a big effort to trap things like foxes and cats, because for the brush tailed rock wallaby that is their major predator, the foxes," he says.

"So if their food source is put out, then we've got to make sure that predators aren't taking advantage of that."

Great to see our Mayor showing leadership at a time sorely needed within Australia and NSW. Good on you Greg - you are on the right side of history!

Wagga Wagga mayor Greg Conkey takes up challenge and drives to Sydney and back in the council’s electric vehicle, just to prove the doubting councillors and media wrong.
