This is why I teach … not because of the gifts and goodies. It’s about the jar full of letters from my students where they have written honest, heartfelt reflections about the impact being in my class has made on their learning and on them personally.

Yes, teaching is about planning lessons, organising resources, explicit explanations, creating engaging learning activities, giving feedback, marking, writing reports and lots of meetings.

Yet for me, at the core of teaching is building relationships, getting to know my students and how they learn, encouraging them to have a go, coaching them around what they have done well and how they can improve, helping them gain confidence in their abilities and helping them to know that each one is valued as a unique individual who, when they believe in themselves, can follow their dreams.

Teaching changes lives … including the life of the teacher!
