Yesterday morning when setting the sprinkler around the side garden area at the cottage I stumbled across this absolutely astonishing (not so) little frog.
I’d never seen anything like it before.
The size alone was a shock. It was huge! Like seriously BIG compared to any frog I’d encountered before.
After taking some photos and having a feeling this little person was something special, I enquired with the Frog & Toad ID Australia group as to what he may be.
Turns out it’s a Southern Bell Frog which happens to be classified as endangered in NSW (🤯). The species is also found in Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, where it has also become endangered and subsequently listed as vulnerable in Australia.
One of the largest frog species in Australia, these animals may reach up to 104 mm in length, with females usually larger than males. I’m unsure if our little garden resident is male or female, but they were certainly of size.
Reading the Environment NSW website, there appears to be numerous recovery strategies and activities in place to try assist the species. A quick google search also uncovered more information and groups looking to save the species than I’d imagined. Talk about fascinating!
As I sit here typing this I feel a special kind of awe to think our little cottage has been able to provide a home for such a beautiful & endangered little person 🙏🏽🐸✨
