The news for the Murray River just keeps on coming...
This is big...
We can now officially announce that the second largest freshwater crayfish in the world - Murray crayfish - will be reintroduced back into the Murray River in South Australia!
*note that this is a protected species in SA, and requires a licence to catch in Vic (and must be carefully measured) to ensure we can keep this species going into the future.
This will be one of the most significant reintroduction projects ever conducted in the state. The idea was first proposed in the 1980s, not long after it was thought to have disappeared, and it has taken almost a decade of planning to get to this stage. But now the opportunity has presented to bring the species back to SA.
This project is a partnership with the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board and supported by North West Aquaculture.
