The legendary steam locomotive No. 60163 Tornado is set to return to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway this summer. 🚂❤️

Tornado, one of Britain’s best-known steam engines, will run special trips through the North York Moors National Park from Monday, July 27 to Saturday, August 1, and again from Monday, August 3 to Saturday, August 8, 2026.

The locomotive will offer return journeys with reserved seats at 9:55am and 1:05pm. There’s also a special Fish & Chips evening trip at 7pm on Wednesday, July 29.

Tornado was built in the 21st century, inspired by the classic era of steam trains. It’s a favorite among railway fans and visitors. Tornado has appeared in Paddington 2, was part of Top Gear’s Race to the North, and made history in 2017 by reaching 100mph during testing. It was the first steam locomotive in Britain to reach that speed since the 1960s.

Paul “Piglet” Middleton said the railway is excited to welcome Tornado back. He called it a remarkable engine that still captures the imagination of visitors of all ages.

Thanks to its speed, style, and star appeal, Tornado’s return is expected to be one of the top heritage railway events in North Yorkshire this summer.

North York Moors Folklore: The Gytrash of Goathland. 🐺🌙

They say if you wander the lonely paths around Goathland after dusk, you might hear it before you see it…

A heavy tread on the moorland track.
A low growl in the fog.
Two fiery eyes watching from the heather.

This is the Gytrash — a ghostly, shape-shifting spirit of northern English folklore.

Sometimes it appears as a huge shaggy black dog.
Sometimes as a horse.
Sometimes as a mule.

And no one truly knows what it wants.

To some travellers, the Gytrash is a warning, a harbinger of doom leading the lost deeper into the mist. In other tales, it becomes something stranger: a guide appearing from the shadows to lead wanderers safely back to the road.

The creature was immortalized in classic literature by Charlotte Brontë in her 1847 novel Jane Eyre, where the title character encounters a "Gytrash" (in the form of a large dog) on the road to Thornfield.

Goathland, North Yorkshire, where folklore, mist, and mystery linger on the moors.
