Central Highlands Book Thoughts

I am considering creating a book of poems and images to capture the beauty of the Central Highlands. You may have come across some of my poems before, but if you'd like to explore more, feel free to visit my page. You'll find a variety of works, ranging from humorous responses to images to more sentimental and emotionally engaging pieces. I've been passionate about writing since Grade 7 (in other words, a long, long time ago), and I love how poetry can convey deep emotions and complement imagery.

I would greatly appreciate your input on two things: First, would you be interested in a book of poems and images from the Central Highlands? It could make for a wonderful gift! Second, do you have any photos, memories, images, or stories of local heroes that you would like to see included in the book? If so, please send me a direct message, and we can discuss further.

Additionally, if you would like a custom poem for any occasion, don't hesitate to reach out. Let's celebrate and promote our beautiful Central Highlands together. Thank you!

The Saga of "The Mexican" at Great Lake, Tasmania

At Great Lake, Tasmania, there's a sight to behold,
A rock statue so funny, its tale's often retold.
They call him "The Mexican," standing proud and upright,
Between Cramps Bay and Jonah, he's a comical sight.

For well over 40 years, he's been quite the show,
Dressed in odd costumes, he's the star of the road.
From sombrero to tutu, and sometimes a wig,
This boulder's a legend, a rockstar that's big.

Locals love to play dress-up, it’s quite the affair,
They've put him in un**es, once even a bear!
He's donned festive ponchos, and sometimes a bra,
"The Mexican" stands out, like a roadside rock star.

He's been toppled, knocked flat to the ground,
But with duct tape and glue, he was swiftly rebound.
Rebuilt by the locals, with care and with pride,
He's a beacon for travellers, a humorous guide.

"Meet near The Mexican," the locals all say,
"Just past Jonah Bay, you can't miss the display."
He’s more than a landmark, he's part of the lore,
A symbol of fun that we all just adore.

So if you’re near Great Lake, give a honk and a cheer,
To "The Mexican" who's been there for many a year.
In rain or in shine, in costume or none,
His story's a hoot, a laughter-filled run.

For decades he’s stood, in outfits galore,
A rock with a wardrobe, who could ask for more?
"The Mexican" at Great Lake, a legend so grand,
The funniest statue in all of the land!

**Ballad of the Miena Cider Gums**

*(Verse 1)*
In the heart of Tasmania, where the highlands rise,
There's a tale of the Cider Gums 'neath the southern skies,
A village called Miena holds their sacred ground,
With whispers of the weeping trees all around.

*(Chorus)*
Oh, Miena Cider Gums, your leaves they weep,
Frost-kissed guardians, in silence you keep,
Endangered and rare, your story's been told,
In the heart of the highlands, where the winds are cold.

*(Verse 2)*
Once strong and proud, you faced the test of time,
Frost-tolerant eucalypts, in your prime,
But since the early '90s, a shadow's been cast,
A gradual decline, your days fading fast.

*(Chorus)*
Oh, Miena Cider Gums, your leaves they weep,
Frost-kissed guardians, in silence you keep,
Endangered and rare, your story's been told,
In the heart of the highlands, where the winds are cold.

*(Bridge)*
Within a 20-kilometre span, you stand alone,
A testament to resilience, your seeds were sown,
But now your branches bend, your leaves fall down,
In Miena’s quiet village, your legacy is found.

*(Verse 3)*
We sing of your struggle, your fight to survive,
In the wild Central Highlands, where you strive,
May the world remember your gentle grace,
The weeping Cider Gums in this rugged place.

*(Chorus)*
Oh, Miena Cider Gums, your leaves they weep,
Frost-kissed guardians, in silence you keep,
Endangered and rare, your story's been told,
In the heart of the highlands, where the winds are cold.

*(Outro)*
So here's to the Cider Gums, forever true,
In the heart of Tasmania, we'll remember you,
With every frost-kissed morning, your spirit stays,
In the highlands of Miena, where your memory lays.

The Miena Cider Gums, or weeping trees, are rare and special. They evolved to be the most frost-tolerant of all eucalypts, but since the early 1990s, they have faced a gradual decline, leading to their current listing as an endangered species.

These trees are only found within a 20km radius of Miena, a small village in Tasmania's Central Highlands.

Local photographer Joy Kachina took this incredible capture. Thanks for the share, Joy 🙌

# # # The Ballad of Geoffrey Brown: Fencing, Fishing, and a Few Beers Down

(Verse 1)
Well, Geoffrey Brown’s got a brand new gig,
Out on his own, buildin' fences big,
He’s left his boss but still outdoors,
Now he’s hammerin’ posts and mendin’ old doors.

(Chorus)
Give Geoffrey a call if you need a good fence,
He’ll be there quicker than a Tassie devil’s sense,
But don’t you forget, he loves his beer,
Fishing and hunting, ain't no need to cheer.

(Verse 2)
Down in Tasmania, where the air is clear,
Geoff’s got a hammer in one hand, the other? A beer!
He’s buildin' up walls and knockin' them down,
But come Friday night, he’s the drunkest in town.

(Chorus)
Give Geoffrey a call if you need a good fence,
He’ll be there quicker than a Tassie devil’s sense,
But don’t you forget, he loves his beer,
Fishing and hunting, ain't no need to cheer.

(Bridge)
Now, he ain’t just about posts and rails,
Geoffrey’s stories are taller than whales,
He’ll spin you a yarn 'bout the one that got away,
And how he drank twenty pints by the end of the day.

(Verse 3)
Geoffrey Brown’s the man to hire,
But catch him after work, he’s a right ol' crier,
In the pub with a pint, tellin’ tales obscene,
Of fences and fish, and places he’s been.

(Chorus)
Give Geoffrey a call if you need a good fence,
He’ll be there quicker than a Tassie devil’s sense,
But don’t you forget, he loves his beer,
Fishing and hunting, ain't no need to cheer.

(Outro)
So here’s to Geoffrey, the fencing king,
Who loves a beer more than anything,
Call him for fences, but be ready to hear,
A tale or two, with a frosty beer!

Winter Magic in the Central Highlands

(Verse 1)
There's a place where the snow falls softly,
Central Highlands in winter, oh so lively.
Crisp clean air, so invigorating,
Wood fires burning, hearts captivating.

(Pre-Chorus)
With fresh hot soup and a country hotel,
Friendly faces with stories to tell.
Snow sculptures rising, snowballs in flight,
Dogs running free in the pure white light.

(Chorus)
Central Highlands, oh, you're a dream,
Winter wonderland, a frosty gleam.
Deer in the snow, photos so grand,
Auroras dancing, a magical land.
But be careful on the roads, my friend,
Drive slow and steady to the journey’s end.

(Verse 2)
Cider gums standing tall, frozen delight,
Nature's sculptures shining in the moonlight.
Children laughing, building dreams in the snow,
Friendly folks with warmth to bestow.

(Pre-Chorus)
Country hotels, a cozy retreat,
Inviting all travelers to come in and eat.
Hot soup in bowls, warming the soul,
Stories of winters and legends of old.

(Chorus)
Central Highlands, oh, you're a dream,
Winter wonderland, a frosty gleam.
Deer in the snow, photos so grand,
Auroras dancing, a magical land.
But be careful on the roads, my friend,
Drive slow and steady to the journey’s end.

(Bridge)
Snowflakes falling, painting the scene,
Life in the Highlands, feels like a dream.
From the frozen sculptures to the aurora’s glow,
Every moment’s magic in the winter snow.

(Verse 3)
In the heart of the night, under starlit skies,
The auroras dance, a mesmerizing surprise.
Families gather 'round the fire’s warm glow,
Sharing tales of the past, letting love flow.

(Pre-Chorus)
With a hot cider in hand, and laughter so bright,
Winter in the Highlands, a pure delight.
From dawn's first light to the evening’s end,
Memories are made with every friend.

(Chorus)
Central Highlands, oh, you're a dream,
Winter wonderland, a frosty gleam.
Deer in the snow, photos so grand,
Auroras dancing, a magical land.
But be careful on the roads, my friend,
Drive slow and steady to the journey’s end.

(Verse 4)
Snowball fights with the kids, laughter fills the air,
Dogs chasing through the drifts without a care.
Majestic deer in the snow, a sight to behold,
Every winter's tale here, waiting to be told.

(Pre-Chorus)
Country hotels, a cozy embrace,
Welcoming all with a warm, friendly face.
Soup that warms you from your head to your toes,
As the fire crackles, the evening glows.

(Chorus)
Central Highlands, oh, you're a dream,
Winter wonderland, a frosty gleam.
Deer in the snow, photos so grand,
Auroras dancing, a magical land.
But be careful on the roads, my friend,
Drive slow and steady to the journey’s end.

(Bridge)
Snowflakes falling, painting the scene,
Life in the Highlands, feels like a dream.
From the frozen sculptures to the aurora’s glow,
Every moment’s magic in the winter snow.

(Outro)
So, come to the Highlands, in the winter’s embrace,
Feel the warmth of this special place.
From the wood fires burning to the crisp, clean air,
Central Highlands in winter, beyond compare.

(Chorus)
Central Highlands, oh, you're a dream,
Winter wonderland, a frosty gleam.
Deer in the snow, photos so grand,
Auroras dancing, a magical land.
But be careful on the roads, my friend,
Drive slow and steady to the journey’s end.

Title: "Sailing Through Storms: The Ballad of Tasmania's Rock Lobster Fishermen"

(Verse 1)
Out on the wild Tasman Sea, where the waves rise high,
Brave souls chase the rock lobster 'neath the southern sky.
With weather fierce and unrelenting, they sail day and night,
Facing danger with every breath, in the fading light.

(Verse 2)
The boats need constant care, with repairs in endless flight,
Engines strain against the current, in the dead of night.
Lost at sea, lost to the waves, friends gone in a heartbeat,
Their memories a beacon, in the ocean's cold retreat.

(Pre-Chorus)
But still they go, with hearts so bold and true,
For the love of the sea, for the catch they pursue.
Through the storms that test their will,
They stand strong, they carry still.

(Chorus)
Oh, Tasmania, land of rugged coast and sea,
Where the fishermen battle, and their hearts run free.
Through storms that rage and boats that break,
They carry on for their loved ones' sake.

(Verse 3)
Miles from home, families wait with hope and fear,
Praying for safe returns, as time stretches near.
The loneliness of the ocean, the ache of being apart,
Weigh heavy on their hearts, a constant tug at the start.

(Bridge)
And when the catch is in, but the markets refuse,
Their mental burden grows, their spirits start to bruise.
Yet still they fight, through hardship and despair,
For the livelihood they cherish, for the sea's embrace so rare.

(Verse 4)
The camaraderie of the crew, the bonds that tightly bind,
Through laughter shared and stories told, they ease their troubled mind.
But the loss of friends, lost at sea or in the fray,
Leaves an ache that never dulls, a pain that doesn't sway.

(Pre-Chorus)
But still they go, with hearts so bold and true,
For the love of the sea, for the catch they pursue.
Through the storms that test their will,
They stand strong, they carry still.

(Chorus)
Oh, Tasmania, stand beside them strong and true,
For the rock lobster fishers, who face the ocean blue.
In their struggle, in their fight, we must unite,
To support them through the darkness, into the light.

(Bridge)
So here's to the rock lobster fishers, on Tasmania's shore,
Their courage and their spirit, forever we'll adore.
Through the dangers, through the pain, through the storm,
They'll sail on, for Tasmania, where their hearts are warm.

(Outro)
Let's raise a toast to those who brave the Tasman Sea,
To the fishermen of Tasmania, who fight for you and me.
In their struggle and their toil, in their endless quest,
May they find peace and solace, may they find rest.
