A fishing supply shop in Western Australia's South West is hosting its last fishing competition this ahead of the business closing down for good.

After three years of running, the annual red fin fishing competition brings up to 300 competitors to the Waroona region each year.

Waroona tackle shop owner and competition operator Michelle Field said this year's competition would be the last due to the downturn following the demersal fishing restrictions.

"We have really, really slow winters, so we rely on those demersal fishers every school holidays, to come in," Mrs Field said.

"That's where we make our money. We just have to close because we can't sustain on just fresh water fishing."

Mrs Field said previous entrants travel from Geraldton, Esperance and Albany, bringing tourism to the area.

"We ask everyone to bring their receipts in to show what they've spent in town," Mrs Field said.

"In the two days last year, they'd spent $19,000 in Waroona," she said.

Co-owner of the tackle shop, Glen Field, said the process of selling the shop had been difficult.

"This was our retirement plan," Mr Field said.

Waroona local Darrell Higginbottom has participated in the competition since it began.

"A lot of the competitors aren't in it for the prizes so much as being involved with their families and mixing with other families," Mr Higginbottom said.

"For them to close up the shop is a real blow for Waroona itself and the south west fishing community, it'll be missed," he said.
