Some people leave a bigger footprint than they ever realise.
In 2024, we had the absolute pleasure of meeting Clive Faul when he popped into Church St for a beer. We had a chat, laughed and were told some of the stories of Clive’s tenure as a publican from 1979 to 1985.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, and we were deeply honoured to host Clive’s wake here at Church St. It felt incredibly fitting to farewell a former publican and such a true stalwart of the Border community, on the very site where some of his story was written. Julia generously gifted us a beautiful painting of the old Carriers Arms that had been Clive’s. We’re having it framed and will proudly display it here at Church St — a little piece of the pub’s history, and now a piece of Clive’s story too.
Michael was able to take Clive’s family on a little tour of the unit out the back — where some time had been spent as kids. There was something pretty special about seeing the past and present of this place come together.
Clive was, by all accounts, a goer and a giver — a larrikin with the gift of the gab, an enormous heart and an extraordinary ability to make friends wherever he went.
We feel very lucky to have crossed paths with him, even briefly.
