The month in review…

September gave us a great nature walk with kids (and their parents), SOOO much wildlife, especially wombats, and plenty of progress on safe spelling agistment for your retiree horses.

We were even witness to the first snow falling in the valley in living memory… OK, it was cob hair, but these ponies shed so much in Spring!

Not everything went according to plan — another water tank sprung a leak, we accidentally dug through a water pipe (happily an easy fix), and the whitest horses seem to love the mud the most — but those are often the moments that make life here worth sharing.

Thank you to every guest who stayed with us, every person who followed along and everyone who shared, commented or recommended Willow’s Retreat to someone they know.

Your neighbours at Willow’s Retreat are an interesting bunch.

The wallaroos will watch you arrive as though they’ve been appointed to inspect every new guest.

Wedge-tailed eagles patrol the skies from above.

Glossy black cockatoos announce themselves to the entire valley with their mournful cries.

Whipbirds remain hidden in the bush, while making sure you know they’re there.

And the smaller locals dart between the trees so quickly that getting a clear photo becomes a competitive sport.

Some neighbours are curious.

Some are noisy.

Some only come out at night.

Others prefer to supervise from a safe distance.

None of them respect check-in or checkout times.

To be clear, we’re not running away from anything.

We’re loading the float, packing the tack and temporarily relocating the problem to a 50-acre retreat.

Completely different.

Then returning to work more exhausted than when you left.

Consider this permission to stop over-planning the school holidays.

You don’t need tickets for every day.

You don’t need a colour-coded itinerary.

And you definitely don’t need to spend the entire break driving between activities.

At Willow’s Retreat, mornings can begin with coffee and breakfast overlooking the garden, with your ears filled by birdsong.

The middle of the day might involve a guided nature walk with Phil or Lyndel, where you get to go off the beaten track, and learn more about Yengo and the Wollombi Valley.

And after dinner, everyone can sit and roast marshmallows over the fire.

There’s room for the kids to explore, room for the adults to breathe and no pressure to fit everything into a schedule.

You finish work at 5:00 pm.

The bags are already packed, so you leave straight from work and pick up your favourite takeaway along the way.

If you’re travelling from Sydney, head north towards the Wollombi Valley. Willow’s Retreat is approximately one hour from Hornsby.

Coming from the Central Coast? Head inland, and you could be here in around 45 minutes.

Before long, you’re pulling into the retreat, dropping your bags inside the lodge and lighting the fire.

Takeaway unpacked. Drinks poured. Phones down.

No cooking, airport queues or losing the first day of your getaway to an enormous drive.

Just dinner by the fire and the whole weekend waiting for you.

There’s been plenty happening behind the scenes at Willow’s Retreat and Willow’s Leap.

This one has been two years in the making, but is finally ready for prime time! We’ve been working on safe paddocks, with automated drinkers and natural shade, which will finally allow us to start offering retirement agistment, as well as somewhere to holiday with your horses!

We’re also adding more to the amenities and aesthetic at the Retreat itself, while continuing with our mission to make your stay exactly what you need it to be.

Next on our list are upgrades to the kitchen and bathroom at the retreat, and a revitalising of jumps Willow's Leap Equestrian.

Each one brings us closer to the ideal place for you, with or without your horse, to stay and play.
