T.F.Chen Cultural Center Welcome to the TF Chen Cultural Center, home to exhibitions, talks, and gatherings celebrating the intersection of Eastern and Western art. The T. F.

Founded around the work of Dr. TF Chen — a 90-year-old Taiwan-born, Paris-trained, New York-based painter. Chen Cultural Center is a 501-C3 non-profit organization aiming to promote Dr. Chen’s vision of a “Global New Renaissance in Love” and East-West cultural exchange. As a United Nations 2001 Global Tolerance Award recipient and designated “Cultural Ambassador of Tolerance and Peace,” Dr. Chen devotes his time to writing books and creating artwork that expresses the positive multicultural message of an “Age of Love.”

Dr. T.F. Chen's Competition was featured in the American college textbook Arts and Ideas (William Fleming, Harcourt Brace), pages 685–687, in a section on "Globalism."

Kipling once wrote, "East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet" — but history proved him wrong. From Marco Polo's travels through China, to Columbus sailing west, to Magellan's circumnavigation, to the tea trade and colonial expansion, East and West have long been drawing closer through travel, trade, and cultural exchange.

Chen's Competition dramatizes this global convergence. Born in Taiwan and trained in Paris — where his doctoral dissertation examined East-West artistic relations and the formation of world culture — Chen now lives in New York. The painting shows a Japanese kabuki dancer on one side and a Picasso-style Cubist mandolin player on the other, with a n**e figure drawn from Ingres's Turkish Bath at the center — symbolizing Japanese and Western commercial forces vying for the vast consumer market she represents. Eastern and Western artistic forms meet and merge within the frame itself.

Absolutely. For a major museum, I would make it **more authoritative, elegant, and curatorial**, with less promotional language and greater emphasis on his historical position, artistic movement, and intellectual contribution.

**Dr. T. F. Chen (陳錦芳博士)**
*Painter • Art Historian • Founder of Neo-Iconography*

Dr. T. F. Chen, born in Taiwan in 1936, is a distinguished painter, art historian, and cultural thinker whose seven-decade career has unfolded across Taiwan, Paris, and New York. His practice is distinguished by an enduring dialogue between Eastern and Western visual traditions and by his conviction that art can serve as a language of shared humanity.

In Paris, Chen pursued both studio practice and art-historical scholarship, studying painting for seven years at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and earning a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Paris (Sorbonne) in 1970. He became the **first practicing artist-painter to earn a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Paris (Sorbonne) in 1970**.

In 1969, Chen founded **Neo-Iconography (新意象派)**, a movement that recontextualizes cultural, historical, and artistic symbols across civilizations to create new relationships of meaning. His broader intellectual framework, **Five-Dimensional World Culture**, advances a vision of art beyond geographic and cultural boundaries.

Across an extensive international oeuvre—including the **Spirit of Liberty**, **Post-Van Gogh**, **Olympics**, and other major series—Chen has explored freedom, peace, cultural memory, and the human condition. His work has been exhibited internationally and reproduced in more than 300 textbooks and publications worldwide. A recipient of the **Global Tolerance Award**, he has devoted his career to advancing **“Art for Humanity”** and what he calls a **“Global New Renaissance in Love.”**

Dr. TF Chen is an artist, art historian, author, and cultural visionary. Since 1964, he has advocated for a Global New Renaissance, a flowering of human brilliance through the arts. In 1969, he formulated his “Five-Dimensional World Culture View” and created Neo-Iconography — an approach that juxtaposes images from different eras and civilizations to celebrate a new world culture based in Love. In 1970, he became the first painter to earn a PhD in Art History from the University of Paris (Sorbonne). In 2001, Chen received the Global Tolerance Award at the United Nations and was designated a Cultural Ambassador for Tolerance and Peace. • Creator of the Art for Humanity World Tour (2003–2020), promoting a global culture of peace.

At age 90, Dr. Chen continues his mission with the Hope for America touring exhibition. We are also producing a documentary about his life and art and planning the future TF Chen Art Museum. We warmly invite you to attend the exhibition and participate in these art projects.

Dear Friends in the Art World,

With deep respect and heartfelt sincerity, we cordially invite you to attend the solo exhibition of Dr. T. F. Chen (陳錦芳):

**"Hope for America"**

This marks Dr. Chen's long-awaited return to the United States for a major exhibition — a cultural exchange paying tribute to America through art, and an expression of gratitude.

For more than a decade, Dr. Chen has continued to advance the United Nations-affiliated global art movement "Art for Humanity," touring the world to spread ideals of love, tolerance, peace, and cultural exchange. His return to the U.S. for this large-scale solo exhibition offers a rare opportunity for reunion and dialogue among friends who share a long-standing interest in art and cultural exchange.

This exhibition is not only a cultural tribute from the Chinese art community to the United States, but also an artistic response to two significant historical milestones: the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States (America 250) and the 400th anniversary of the founding of Manhattan (New York 400).

Through Dr. Chen's founding artistic movement, "Neo-Iconography," the exhibition presents shared values of freedom, democracy, human rights, peace, and cultural harmony, while also expressing gratitude for this land that is America. It is a platform for artistic exchange open to people of different ethnicities and cultures coming together.

We are planning a future museum dedicated to Dr. Chen's work, and we sincerely invite friends who share this cultural mission to become founding patrons, helping to leave a lasting legacy for art and culture.

*Life is short; art is eternal.*

As an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist, art historian, author, and cultural visionary, Dr. T. F. Chen has, since 1964 at the University of Paris, wholeheartedly championed a "Global Neo-Renaissance" of East-West cultural exchange, dedicated to enlightening humanity through art. In 1969, he founded the "Fifth Dimensional World Cultural View" and "Neo-Iconography," and adopted "Art for Humanity" as his lifelong mission — skillfully juxtaposing iconic imagery from different eras and civilizations to celebrate a new world culture grounded in love. In 1970, he became the first painter in the world to earn a doctorate in art history from the University of Paris (Sorbonne). In 2001, he received the United Nations' "Global Tolerance Award" and was named a "Cultural Ambassador for Tolerance and Peace." From 2003 to 2020, he successfully organized the "Art for Humanity World Tour," continuing to sow seeds of peace around the globe.

Now, at ninety years of age, Dr. Chen continues to create, carrying forward his belief in art, culture, and the future of humanity through the exhibition "Hope for America."

This is a cultural gathering centered on art, freedom, hope, and shared values.

We sincerely look forward to your presence as we witness "Hope for America" together and open the door to further cultural exchange and collaboration.
