On Friday 28th August 2026, we will be welcoming a very special guest: Koen Goeminne, historian and author of The World of Marcus Gerards: Bruges in 1562, among other works. Using the iconic map of Marcus Gerards, he will guide our guests through the story of Bruges as it appeared nearly five centuries ago.

The idea for this came from a previous post, which revealed that one of our guests has this very map hanging in their living room in the United States. That moment sparked something. When you realise that several long-stay guests share such a deep and genuine interest in the city and its history, it only makes sense to bring that story directly to them.

This approach aligns perfectly with the philosophy of Reizen naar Morgen: not reducing visitors to numbers, but connecting them meaningfully to the place, its story, and its people. Bruges deserves visitors who want to know its story. And that story deserves to be told.

DDK improvements - Part 2

A final round of upgrades, and we are proud (and happy) to say it’s done.

Both Acadia and Clarissa received their last refresh to fully meet our standards. We’re proud of Lore, who carefully coordinated the works throughout every phase. Under her guidance, Vanhecke Elektriciteit Domotica Automatisatie, Dreamworks and PJS Installatietechnieken delivered the final finishing touches with great attention to detail.

Additionally, our holiday rentals St-Donaas, St-Jan, OLV and Carmers were upgraded with brand-new sofas by Stevens Meubel, elevating both comfort and design.

Behind the scenes at De Drie Koningen, we continuously invest in comfort, quality and sustainability. Swipe through to discover part 1 of our recent improvements👇

1️⃣ Very thorough maintenance. This also includes descaling all coffee machines. Tom once again proves himself as the descale champion as we’re doing this four times a year.

2️⃣ Our baby cots have been renewed. We also provide high chairs and children’s tableware, so families can travel lighter.

3️⃣ In apartment Carmers, the shower had been upgraded to a walk-in shower. The glass wall will be installed soon to complete the look.

4️⃣ At St-Niklaas we’ve replaced the dishwasher with a brand new one.

5️⃣ Adding an extra layer of insulation and crepi, allowing us to renew the terrace floor in a next phase.

6️⃣ The seatings of Carmers, OLV, St-Jan and St-Donaas have been removed. What’s coming next will be revealed later!

Important update for our guests visiting Bruges

As from 01/01/2026 the City of Bruges is introducing a new tourist tax for licensed holiday rentals. This will affect the final price of your stay in the coming years. We have explained everything clearly in this article:

What matters most for you as our guest:

✅ Tourist tax only applies to adults (18+)
When you book directly with us, you can now specify exactly how many children are travelling with your group. Children are not subject to tourist tax, so no tax will be charged for them. This ensures a correct and fair calculation.

✅ Direct booking is always cheaper and more transparent
We always aim to be as transparent as possible. Direct bookings reflect local regulations correctly, including age-related tourist taxes. Third-party booking platforms are not designed to handle these local rules properly.

⚠️ Important information about booking platforms

• Bookingcom
Bookingcom does not take children into account when calculating tourist tax. Tourist tax is charged per person, regardless of age. Even if you indicate that a child is newly born, the full tourist tax is applied. After contacting Bookingcom, they advised us to tell guests not to count children as persons — which clearly shows the system is not aligned with local regulations.

• Airbnb
Airbnb only exempts children aged 0–2 years from tourist tax. This means that if you travel to Bruges with, for example, a 16-year-old son or daughter, Airbnb would require you to register them as a one-year-old child to avoid incorrect tourist tax charges.

From fresh safety upgrades to cozy comforts and festive vibes — here’s what we’ve been working on before the high season hits:

1️⃣ Brand-new door closers installed by Traen Van Parys for smoother, safer stays — plus reinforced & renewed door handles.
2️⃣ Holiday home Onze-Lieve-Vrouw got a shiny new dishwasher thanks to Verfaillie Bauwens
3️⃣ All mattresses in St-Jan were replaced for next-level sleep comfort by De Witte Lietaer
4️⃣ Every holiday home is now stocked with new board games for those wintery indoor moments.
5️⃣ Speaking of winter… Lore happily set up all the Christmas trees — her guilty pleasure 🎄
6️⃣ We joined fellow hosts at Provinciaal Hof for a keynote by Tante Kaat on cleaning best practices in holiday rentals, organized by Vlaanderen Vakantieland

🧩 At De Drie Koningen, we’re surrounded by history—literally. We recently added a beautiful new puzzle to our complex of holiday rentals: a detailed 1649 map of Bruges by the famed cartographer Joan Blaeu, sourced from the iconic Brugse Boekhandel

It’s a small tribute to the immense heritage of this remarkable city. Bruges isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place to experience, layer by layer.

(And yes… we completed the puzzle in just two days - even though the box says 8+ years. We like a good challenge. 😉)

📣 Holiday Rental Updates – May 2025 Edition! 🌿✨

We've been busy behind the scenes and are excited to share some great improvements to our holiday homes!

🏡 St-Donaas now features two brand-new Velux skylights, bringing in lots of natural daylight, improving indoor air quality, and offering gentle, natural heating. Cozy and eco-friendly!

⭐️ Our holiday rentals are now fully recognized by Visit Flanders and have received an updated star classification. Huge shoutout to Lore for making that happen – well deserved!

🚲 We solved a logistics issue with… a cargo bike! It now does double duty: in the morning, the kids ride along on the back, and later it’s used to transport laundry. Fresh sheets and towels, all delivered by pedal power!

🧯 Safety check time: Vinçotte came by for a full inspection. A few tweaks were needed (yes, that smoke detector had to go higher to meet the new standard🙃). After a brief adventure with a telescopic ladder, everything was sorted within the day.

🎥 We’ve made new check-in videos to match the recent renovations at the entrance. While we’re always happy to welcome you in person, if we’re not around, the video makes self check-in smooth and stress-free — so you can start enjoying your stay in Bruges right away!

🐟 And finally: Goldfish rescue mission! A sneaky heron had its eye on the pond in the shared garden. But with some quick thinking, we managed to outsmart it and keep our goldfish safe and sound.
