We’re excited to welcome New Orleans-based artist Shaun Richards to our art residency at Le Charbonnage.

As an artist whose work centers figuration and contrasting applications of paint, the use of narrative and an investigative use of signifiers is integral to Shaun’s work. Conceptually, he is concerned with human incentive, artifice, and the dissection of classifications and assumptions—why we do what we do, and how this is reflected within society. He tends to work in series, each with a specific intent under an umbrella term that informs how the works are made and presented.

Currently his work pulls a thread from this narrative and deliberately impresses a sense of fragmentation upon the viewer. Placed against a black and white or tonal background, it visualizes an amplified polarization within American society and political discourse, specifically the reliance on binary categorizations: Right or Left, white or BIPOC, straight or LGBTQ+, privilege vs exclusion, and legal vs individual sovereignty over one’s body.

Looking forward to the coming weeks of creation, exchange, and new ideas at .

Julia Białas - Bestiary
Residency Vernissage: today March 15, 3 - 6PM - Studio Presentation

Julia Białas explores the relationship between humans and other living beings by creating images of hybrid human–animal creatures. She refers to the old philosophical idea that animals exist mainly for human use and questions this way of thinking. By using AI to blend human and animal forms into new, semi-abstract figures, she challenges the boundaries between “us” and “others,” inviting viewers to rethink what it means to be human.

‚My paintings grow largely out of subjective impressions—an attempt to grasp what is most elusive within human nature. Through hybrid figures and subtle deformations, I aim to reveal the human being as a creature in constant metamorphosis.

As an artist, I do not see myself as a coherent entity; rather, I try to capture this inner chaos on the canvas. Painting, for me, is a deep immersion into the invisible layers of my own reality.“ Julia Białas

Julia Białas – Work in Progress
Currently working at our LeCharbonnage Residency

In this striking work-in-progress, Polish artist Julia Białas revisits the Medusa myth through an emotionally charged lens. Her figure stares down the viewer with a gaze that is both defiant and wounded, her serpentine hair merging with the background in a swirl of tension and transformation.

Białas’s intuitive painting process—rooted in emotion rather than detailed planning—allows for hybrid forms to emerge, blurring the lines between human, animal, and symbolic presence. The result is a portrait of metamorphosis, where mythology becomes a vehicle for psychological exploration.

Currently working at the LeCharbonnage residency, Białas is known for her expressive, often unsettling paintings that explore themes of identity, vulnerability, and inner conflict. This evolving piece promises to be another powerful addition to her growing body of work.

Katarzyna Strzykalska - Currently workiing at our residency

‘I create oil paintings in which I engage in a dialogue with traditional, hagiographic depictions of saints—primarily women—through the deformation of the body and form. I am interested in the tension between beauty and unease; I juxtapose aesthetic appeal with elements that evoke disgust or discomfort. My work often returns to the theme of relics—their display and objectification—frequently treated as elements of sacred tourism.

A particular place in my practice is occupied by a fascination with votive and ex-voto images—their symbolism, simplicity of message, and decorative, often naively aesthetic form. I often draw on motifs and details from local churches and the histories of regional Belgian saints, which become starting points for personal reinterpretations of iconography.

I attempt to evoke a personal, long-lost discomfort associated with confronting depictions of suffering and sanctity, reaching into my own memories and emotions. My paintings are an attempt to understand and process this ambivalence.’

Stone Goddesses Create a Women after Hopi Pueblo Myth - Gauche and watercolour on paper, 21x29,7cm, 2025 by Helena Stiasny as part of her residency exhibition Suburban Tales
-
In Hopi mythology, after the world was created, the Stone Goddesses—ancient female deities tied to the earth—shaped the first woman from clay or stone, giving her form with sacred intent. They breathed life into her, imbuing her with spirit and purpose. This act symbolized the divine connection between women, the earth, and fertility. The first woman became the mother of humanity, and through her, the cycles of life, birth, and nature were set in motion.
