A softbox is a directional source. Where a lantern wraps, a softbox focuses and diffuses the light, with a defined falloff. The shape of that falloff, and how quickly it transitions, is where the differences between modifiers start to matter.
Straight from our inventory, the Aputure Light Dome II, III and Quick Dome 90 all share the same parabolic geometry and a front diameter of 90cm. These domes are perfect for small setups with limited subjects. There is no right or wrong, but clients choose these for corporate interviews & portraits or when space is limited.
The Light Dome 150 is essentially very similar, but the dimensions have a great effect on how the light is modified. The diffusion cloth is placed farther away from the light source which results in softer more diffused light. The diffused surface area is a lot bigger then our traditional domes, so the gentle light will cover a greater area. The transition from light to shadow reads closer to a large window than an typical light fixture.
