Two steps from my door, there's Chez Juliette.
It sits right on the corner of rue des Brasseurs and place Maurice Servais, and it's a bar for everyone, the kind of place where everyone ends up talking to everyone. It's also an artists' spot: photo exhibitions on the walls, music nights, a piano, games for kids and grown-ups, and even a dog who lives there.
You pour your own water, you order a b**r (there are alcohol-free ones, mine was), a coffee, a chai latte, or a croissant on Sunday morning, and you settle in, inside or out.
Then we opened the games cupboard and found La Mèn'che: a card game played in Walloon bars and estaminets for almost two centuries, which had nearly disappeared. Two historians from Namur brought it back to life, with illustrations of the animals of the Walloon forest.

I've lived here for years and this one still gets me.

Saturday afternoon, Place du Théâtre. Two teams that have been knocking each other off stilts since 1411: the Mélans from the old town in yellow and black, the Avresses from beyond the ramparts in red and white. The balconies were full, the King came to watch, and the fight went on for more than an hour. A record for the women's joust, which only started five years ago.

Célestine Beaujot took the Diamond Stilt for the second time.

On Sunday, there’s just as much excitement for the men’s tournament, Place Saint Aubain.

The rest of the weekend was the city itself. Drums and brass in the streets, concerts, dancing in traditional dress outside the theatre, stalls open late, fireworks over the Meuse.

Léa came over from France with friends and stayed at ZannA House for the weekend, two streets from all of it. That is the whole point of sleeping in the centre: you open the door and you are already in it.

Same thing every September. Worth planning a weekend around.

There's a chalkboard on rue des Brasseurs that says "vue sur la Sambre & la Citadelle". I went in mostly to check whether that was true 😉

It is. You sit by the window and there it is, the river, the quay, the ramparts right in front of you, with a coffee and a slice of apple cake that tastes like someone's kitchen rather than a café's.

Librairie Mabaliyo is a café-librairie, and Julie runs it the way you'd hope: you walk in once and you're greeted like you've been coming for months. The books are all about gender, sexuality and mental health. Around them, candles, brooches, small ceramic things you didn't come for. And a disco ball, which nobody explains.

This is the kind of address I keep for the people who stay at ZannA House. Not the postcard version of Namur, the one we actually live in.
