Don’t just look at the review score. Read the reviews.

A 4.9⭐ rating looks great.

But when you're trusting a company with your group's ski holiday, the really useful information is in what previous guests actually say.

Look for reviews that mention:

🎿 How smoothly the holiday was organised
😊 The chalet hosts and service
🍽️ The quality of the food
🚐 Getting to and from the slopes
🛏️ Whether the chalet matched expectations
📞 How the company handled problems when something went wrong

And look at the number and age of the reviews, too.

A perfect score from a handful of guests is encouraging.

Hundreds of positive reviews written over many years tell you something different: the company has been delivering consistently, with different guests, different staff and different ski seasons.

No ski holiday will ever be completely predictable — weather changes, flights get delayed and occasionally things break.

What you're really trying to find out is:

Airport transfers are a bigger deal when there are 15 of you.

When comparing ski holidays, it’s easy to treat the airport transfer as a minor detail.

For a couple, maybe it is.

For a group? Not so much. 😂

Getting 10–20 people (and all their luggage!) from the airport to the resort can mean:

✈️ Finding a transfer company
💷 Working out the additional cost
🕐 Coordinating different flight times
🧳 Making sure there’s enough luggage space
📱 Chasing everyone for their flight details
🚐 And figuring out what happens if a flight is delayed

So when you’re comparing chalet prices, check exactly what happens after your plane lands.

Is the transfer included?

Is it organised for you?

Will someone be keeping track of your flight?

And how will the return journey work at the end of the week?

It’s not the most glamorous part of a ski holiday, but having it all taken care of means your holiday effectively starts the moment you walk out of arrivals.

The group organiser shouldn’t have to organise everything.

Every ski group has one. 😂

The person who starts the WhatsApp group, finds the accommodation, chases everyone for deposits, works out the transfers and somehow becomes responsible for answering questions like “Do I need to book ski hire?” and “What time are we skiing on Tuesday?”

If that’s you, one thing is worth looking for when choosing your accommodation:

How much help will you get once you’ve booked?

A good chalet company should be able to help with the practical bits of the holiday — things like:

🎿 Ski hire
⛷️ Lessons
🚐 Airport transfers and getting to the slopes
🍽️ Restaurant recommendations and reservations
🧖 Local activities and things to do away from skiing
❓ All those little questions your group will inevitably have

Local knowledge makes a huge difference here. Rather than ten people independently Googling what to book and where to go, you have someone in the resort who already knows how everything works.

So if you’ve volunteered (or somehow been volunteered) to organise this year’s group ski trip, ask prospective chalet companies:

“What can you help us organise?”

The answer might save you a lot of WhatsApp admin.

Ask what happens on the nights your chalet hosts don’t cook.

Most catered chalet holidays include several evening meals rather than catering every night — and we actually think that’s a good thing.

Eating together in the chalet is one of the joys of a ski holiday, but the nights out give you a chance to experience the resort too. 🍷

The catch when you’re travelling as a group?

Finding somewhere suitable for 10–20 people can be a bit more complicated than wandering into town and choosing somewhere that looks nice. 😂

That’s where a good chalet team can make life much easier.

They should know:

🍽️ Which restaurants are genuinely good
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Which ones work well for larger groups
🥗 Where to go for different tastes or dietary requirements
🇧🇬 Where to experience some proper local food
📞 And, ideally, be able to arrange the bookings for you

In Bansko there are some fantastic traditional restaurants as well as plenty of international options — and the people who live and work in the resort know which ones are worth visiting.

Our advice? Don’t spend hours researching restaurants before your holiday. Ask your chalet company for their recommendations and let them help organise your nights out.

Don’t assume everyone in your group wants the same ski holiday.

One person wants to be on the first lift.

Someone else hasn’t skied for ten years.

There’s a beginner who’s quietly terrified, an expert already studying the piste map… and at least one person mainly interested in lunch. 😂

Mixed-ability groups work brilliantly — if you choose the resort with that in mind.

Look for:

⛷️ Plenty of terrain for beginners and intermediates
🎿 Good-value lessons for anyone who wants to improve
🏔️ Enough variety to keep stronger skiers entertained
🍽️ Mountain restaurants where everyone can meet for lunch
🚐 Easy transport so the whole group doesn’t have to leave and return together
🍷 A town with enough going on for anyone who fancies an afternoon off

And remember: you don’t have to ski together all day to have a great group ski holiday.

Some of the best bits happen afterwards anyway — everyone back at the chalet, cake on the table, comparing stories of spectacular skiing, questionable technique and who had the best fall of the day. 😄

Choose somewhere that works for the whole group, and let everyone ski the holiday they want.

Things we wish every ski group knew before booking #4

Check the bedroom layout before everyone pays their deposit.

It’s one of the least exciting parts of planning a group ski holiday… but it can save a surprising amount of awkwardness later. 😂

A chalet that “sleeps 16” doesn’t necessarily have eight identical bedrooms.

Before booking, find out:

🛏️ How many rooms can be doubles or twins?
🚿 Are the bedrooms en-suite?
👫 Are any rooms particularly suited to couples?
👨‍👩‍👧 Are there family or triple rooms?
📐 Are some rooms noticeably bigger than others?

Then work out roughly who will sleep where before confirming the chalet.

This becomes particularly important with a mixture of couples and friends. Nobody wants to discover after paying that two friends are sharing a double bed while one lucky couple has accidentally acquired the enormous family suite. 😬

A good chalet company should be happy to talk you through the room configuration and help find the most sensible arrangement for your group.

Get the bedrooms right at the beginning and you’ll avoid one of the classic group-holiday headaches before you’ve even packed your skis.

“Close to the lifts” isn’t always the best location.

When choosing a ski chalet, it’s easy to assume that the closer you are to the gondola, the better.

But think about the whole week, not just the journey to the slopes each morning.

If your chalet provides a morning lift shuttle, you can have the best of both worlds: an easy journey to skiing and a chalet in a part of town where you actually want to spend your evenings.

For groups, we’d look at things like:

🍷 Can you walk to bars and restaurants?
🍽️ Is it easy to head out on the chalet hosts’ nights off?
🏘️ Are you staying somewhere with a bit of local character?
🚐 And crucially — how will you actually get to the slopes each morning?

In Bansko, this is particularly worth thinking about. The gondola area is only one part of town, and staying elsewhere doesn’t necessarily mean a difficult start to your ski day if transport is taken care of.

Choose the location that works for your whole holiday — not just the first ten minutes of your morning.

Your chalet hosts matter more than the hot tub.

Hot tubs look great in photos. But when guests talk about their ski holiday months — or even years — later, it’s usually the people they remember.

Great chalet hosts do far more than cook dinner.

They notice who needs an extra coffee before skiing. ☕
They remember that someone’s vegetarian.
They know where to book dinner on the chalet night off.
They’ll help with ski hire, lessons and all those little questions that crop up during the week.
And they create the atmosphere that turns a nice chalet into somewhere the whole group genuinely enjoys coming home to.

For a group holiday, that matters.

You can have the fanciest chalet in the resort, but if the service is disorganised or impersonal, you’ll notice it every day.

So when you’re researching catered chalets, don’t just scroll through the property photos.

Read the reviews and see what previous guests say about the people looking after them.

A hot tub is lovely.

Don’t compare chalet prices. Compare what’s included.

Two catered chalets might look £100 per person apart at first glance… but the cheaper one isn’t necessarily cheaper once you arrive.

Before comparing prices, check whether they include:

✈️ Airport transfers
🚐 Daily transport to the slopes
🍳 Breakfast
🍰 Afternoon cake
🍽️ Evening meals
🍷 Wine with dinner
🧖 Spa access or other extras

For a group of 10–20 people, paying separately for transfers and daily transport alone can make quite a difference to the final cost.

There’s also the convenience factor. Having someone meet you at the airport, get you to the chalet, feed you and sort out getting everyone onto the mountain each morning removes a surprising amount of group admin.

So when you’re comparing ski holidays, our advice is simple:

Work out what the whole holiday will cost — not just the price of the bed.
