You have been to Sofia. You have walked along the Lion's Bridge. And do you know what the four lions guarding the bridge symbolize? I am sure you do. It is good to remember and bow our heads on this day.

On the morning of November 15, 1877, four gallows were erected in four places in Sofia. On charges of distributing rebellious literature, the four prominent Sofia booksellers - Nikola Krushkin-Cholaka, Kiro Kafedzhi, Stoyan Tabakov and Georgi Stoitsev - Abadzhiyata - were hanged in front of their shops. Their memory is sealed in the four lion statues on the Lion's Bridge. The fifth lion - Nikola Vardev miraculously survived.

Shortly after the Liberation, at the idea of ​​Hristo G. Danov - a public figure and one of the largest book publishers in Bulgaria - a decision was made to build the Lion's Bridge. The construction was undertaken by the Prošek brothers' firm, with their cousin Václav working on the project.

The four lions - a symbol of the four hanged booksellers - were made by the company "Waagner Biro", which worked on the Vienna State Opera and the reconstruction of the Reichstag in Berlin and the British Museum in London.

The Lion Bridge was built in the period 1889 - 1891.
