From the early 20th century

“Buenos Aires’s history in the whereabouts of the so-called Plaza Mayor, today ocupied Plaza de Mayo and other public administration offices.

To the east, the Casa Rosada (Pink House), where the Presential offices are now located, used to be a fortress in colonial times. To the north, visitors will find the Metropolitan Cathedral, and to the west, the Cabildo, the mkst important institutional colonial building of those days.

Underneath, a line A subway station is preserved as it was at the beginning of the 20th century with its wagons. The station was inaugurated in 1913 and was the first in Latin America.”

Oh! Yes, streets have souls!
(...) Behold Ouvidor lane. Almost human, a liar,
a pretender, a boaster, trying to take part in everything (...).
Misericórdia lane, on the other hand, is the stark image of disgrace,
The gloomy old boarding houses, an eternal lament (...).
The first street of Rio, Royalt, rascals, and the greedy strolled down this path,
The naked slaves, and their owners carried in hammocks (...)

“La Gran Via": "The Argentine poet would never get tired to say that Mayo Avenue was the avenue of civility: It links the Congress to the Government House and Argentines march along it for their rights.

But the beautiful avenue is also a symbol of the bond between Argentines and Spanish. That is the rason why Mayo Avenue reminds everyone of Madrid's Gran Via. Its imposing facades are the clear evidence of Argentina's cultural splendour by the end of the 19th century.

Federico Garcia Lorca, Jorge Luis Borges, Gioccomo Puccini, Albert Einstein, Josephine Baker, among other great personalities, strolled along this avenue, where the many bars are an ideal option to take a break.”

Under the asphalt: “Following the tracks of city's history is simple. The walk starts at la Manzana de las Luces (Block of Enlightment), the Jesuits intellectual centre since 1633.

The place presents curious underground tunnels built during the 18th Century that liked the Cabildo and the Cathedral with San Ignacio, San Francisco, Santo Domingo, San Juan, del Salvador churches, the old Irish Convent and other surrounding buildings.

Although the original function of the tunnels was the city's defense, they were later used for smuggling. Guided visits depart from Perú 272."

Lasting splendour: “One of Buenos Aires most charming attractions is its long-lasting splendour, evidenced by hundreds of buildings. The traveler will be amazed to see some of them in Retiro, for instance, just across San Martin square, the same-name palace and the Circulo Militar.

A little for away, on L. Alem and Corrientes Avenues, the Post Office Palace, it is a cultural centre. The Customs building rounds the idea of the magnificence of the city.

Also, on Avenida de Mayo 200, the old building that bolonged to La Prensa newspaper is today's the City Secretariat of Culture. Not to mention, the Colon Theatre, on Cerrito 618.”

Shopping underneath a dream dome: "Over a century ago, it was called Bon Marche and designed by architects Emilio Agrelo and Roland le Vacher, today, it is called Galerias Pacífico, one of the most elegant shopping malls of the city.

Today's structure maintains the remodellation made in the 40s when the ground floor was turned into a commercial mall and the passages were roofed whith concrete domes.

The main dome was decoreted with murals painted by argentines painters Juan Carlos Castagnino, Antonio Berni, Cirilo Colmenio, Lino Spilimbergo and Demetrio Urruchúa. It is impossible not to admire them. The latest renovation took place in 1990.

Today, the building is occuped by an important shopping mall, the Jorge Luis Borges Cultural Centre and dancer Julio Boca Dance School. There is also a food court. Florida 753."

Reading spot: “Nobody can doubt of Buenos Aires’ literary tradition. Writers such as Jorge L. Borges or Julio Catazár are examples of a unique literature born in a city where its inhabitants have devotion for books. The number of bookstores thar sprout in every neighbourhood of the city evidences such attachmement to literature.

One of those bookstores is El Ateneo Gran Splendid, recently chosen as the second fairest bookstore in the world by British newspaper The Gardian. The list made by Sean Dodson gathered the ten best bookstores.

Dodson explains that the huge store located in Santa Fe 1860 ‘has retained its former splendour, with high lainted celing, original balconies and ornate carvings intact. Even the crimson stage curtains remain part of the show. Comfy chairs are scattered throughout, the stage is utilised as a reading area and café, and even better, the former theatre boxes ar used as tiny reading rooms.’

El Ateneo occupies what used to be a theatre that hosted the likes of important artists, such as tango singer Carlos Gardel.”
