Santa Teresa Bairro

The neighborhood exists since 18th century and is named after a monastery. Wealthy families were installed there building big mansions. In 1872 the tram was inaugurated and almost 20 years later it started to run on the aqueduct from Largo Carioca. In the late 19th century, become the favorite place of bohemians, artists. The neighborhood hasn’t changed almost anything the last 100 years as if time stopped running!

Our neighborhood Glória in 1905

Derived its name from the church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro. This tranquil area has some bars and restaurants. Another important feature is Marina da Glória, not only a harbour for visiting boats and a base for fishing trips, but also venue for events and concerts.

Palácio do Catete- 14minwalking distance from Cidade Maravilhosa Hostel

It was the official residence of the presidents of the republic between 1897 and 1960, until the capital was transferred to Brasilia. It has a gallery with all the silverware, furniture and documents that portray this period the country. Besides all the beauty of the palace, there is a huge garden behind the museum. Ilha de Paquetá - 2h by boat from the Praca XI (city center)Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro.

The island, an auto-free zone, whose name is from a Tupi word means "many pacas". Paquetá has twenty baobabs, a type of African tree - the only ones in Brazil beside the Baobá in Passeio Público in Fortaleza. One of the trees is called "Maria Gorda" (Maria, the Fatty), which residents kiss for luck. Up to the end of the 15th century, the Tamoio Indians used Paquetá as hunting and living grounds, then discovered by French in 1556.

Later, under Portuguese rule, Paquetá was then divided into two areas Campo and the Ponte, a division which is conspicuously present in the Island's festivities, in football matches and in the parade of dancing and singing groups during Carnival. During that time aristocratic land and slave owners occupied the island.
