Books is the kind of place where stories are written every single day, in every corner of this old building. And a surprising number of them start with a random conversation on the (now) purple sofa.

Sure, it’s occasionally used for a post-party nap… but it’s mostly where strangers become travel buddies, plans turn into adventures, and “I’m only staying two nights” somehow becomes two weeks.

The purple sofa has seen it all. And if those walls could talk… they’d probably ask for two more dangerous caipirinhas. 💜🍹

Some travelers collect places. Others collect people.

Jonah came to Rio looking for something beyond the usual tourist path: less Sugarloaf Mountain, more Penha hikes, more local stories, more real connections.

After more than two months, it’s time to say see you later. The number of people who came to say goodbye says everything about the kind of person he is: loyal, genuine, and unforgettable.

You arrived as a traveler and leave as family!

This isn’t the first time this has happened, but it was definitely the most special one.

Khadija booked just a few nights at Books and somehow ended up staying for over a month. Mornings were never really her thing and breakfast rarely got the chance to see her, but every evening she was there for happy hour with the biggest smile and the warmest hugs.

We thought it would be one of those long goodbyes, but before we knew it, she came back. Not as a guest this time, but as part of the family and a member of the team.

And now, after another month of seeing that smile every day, it’s time to say goodbye once again.

Every era comes to an end… and after so many nights at your place in Rio — quite a few of them in the staff room — countless gin & tonics at the Books bar, and way too many caipirinhas at the Cachaça bar… some of them, of course, accompanied by André and those deep “let’s solve life tonight” conversations — Harry says this is the end.

But knowing him… it might just be a “see you soon” until he starts missing the chaos, the sun, and the magic of Rio life again.

We’ll keep a gin & tonic ready… just in case 🍸

What ice cream flavor are you? This question might not be a common one, however, if you are ever curious, you can ask !

Last past months here have been anything but boring. A lot of caipirinhas made, a lot of hungover faces the next morning, a lot of memories created.

These people are the best of Books. And Books can only be great with represented by great people. Job done ✅!

I wonder how many people left an uber or a taxi, looked at the front door and thought: Where the hell am I? Barely knowing that entering that door would change something. Soon, very soon , that tiny look building with no signs at the front door will feel like home and will bring them joy.

We can say Jake basically life in Rio now with some brief spells back home. 5th time was special as it was supposed to be. A stay filled w friends, good and sure some excess and cachaca bar. Looking forward for next encounter! Stay safe Jake Swain !

2025 - the 10th Christmas in Lapa edition went all very well. A very sad day and also beautiful. Beautiful to see people jumping in to help, people being grateful and a community being formed. Sad , very sad, to see how many do not have the basics.

Many thanks to Books Family for showing up, it does really matter.
