Coral reefs support 25% of marine life and up to one billion people's livelihoods while generating nearly $30 billion annually through tourism, fisheries, and coastal protection. But these rich ecosystems are in serious jeopardy: over half of global reefs died over the past several decades and more than 90% are on track to die by 2050. Coral Vita provides solutions for communities, companies, and

countries dependent upon healthy reefs to protect their livelihoods and revenue streams. Co-founded by friends Sam Teicher and Gator Halpern, we are driven by our lifelong connections to the oceans, and aim to give coral reefs the chance to survive changing conditions that threaten their existence. Coral Vita uses accelerated coral farming to preserve and enhance threatened reefs. Our corals are chosen because they are local to the restoration site and proven by marine scientists to be more resilient to changing conditions, such as warming temperatures and acidification. We will assess your reef's health, determine what corals should be grown to revive it, raise these corals in our on-land nurseries, install them into the reef once they are mature, and monitor their progress after installation for a time pre-determined with you. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), coral reefs generate nearly $30 billion annually through tourism, fisheries, and coastal protection. They create 15% of GDP for over two dozen countries, provide food security for hundreds of millions of people living in tropical coastal zones, and buffer coastlines for storm surges and erosion, reducing wave energy by up to 97%. Dying corals threaten ecosystems and economies. If a region's reefs are not revived, tourists seeking dive and snorkel experiences will skip its hotels for other islands, fisheries reliant upon reefs as nurseries will face collapse, and coastal residents and properties will be more exposed to rising seas and stronger storms. Whether you are a government that needs to protect its economy and citizenry, a resort that doesn't want to lose its valuable attraction, a reef restoration based-organization looking to reduce overhead, or a corporation or individual looking to invest in ways to benefit the planet, Coral Vita has a solution for reviving reef health. We are deeply saddened to share that our friend and colleague Joe Oliver passed away the morning of May 20th, 2026 from a brain tumor that was discovered just a few weeks ago. After emergency surgery and initial rounds of chemotherapy, he tragically faced something that proved too much for even the toughest of humans we know.

Joe joined Coral Vita in 2019 - our longest-serving team member - and was part of our company’s beating heart. No matter how tough things got for us or him, he always showed up and put his body and soul on the frontline for others. For the ocean during coral bleaching events. For Grand Bahama communities and townships ravaged by Hurricane Dorian. For his people when they needed him, even when they never asked. He was known by many as Joe Creature, and his favorite drink was Monster - but he was anything but that. For all his gruffness, his heart was always there for those who mattered.

He passed while surrounded by his family, and had just reunited with his beloved dog Meatball aka Akon, thanks to the generosity Coral Vita’s Dr. Katelyn Gould and Simon Dixon, and our former colleague Dr. Katey Lesneski.

Joe was a friend. Joe was teammate. Joe was a teacher. Joe was a warrior for sea, for the planet, for his community. He nursed injured turtles back to health. He taught Prince William and Princess Kate to plant coral. He even had the courage to live with our founders Sam Teicher and Gator Halpern for nearly two years. We’ll miss his cheesecake and gardening. His dark jokes and dark rum. His gold chains and his fish bait. His stubbornness and his generosity. His ‘darlin’s’ and his creativity. His friendship and his smiles.

His impact on the Coral Vita team, the reefs and on his entire community was profound, and will continue to resonate deeply with us all.

Thanks for everything Joe. May your memory forever be a blessing. We all miss you very much.

For World Reef Day, here’s a reminder that reefs are more than just coral.

Every hole in a reef is someone’s home.

Tiny gaps and crevices become shelter for fish, crabs, shrimp, eels, and countless other reef residents.

Some spend their entire lives in spaces this small.

The reef is more crowded, connected, and alive than most people realize, denser than a major metropolitan city.
