Today we pay our respects to Mrs. Russell’s House.
For almost 150 years, this beautiful old Bahamian home stood as a part of the history and character of Governor’s Harbour.
During the early hours of Friday morning, it was struck by lightning and tragically destroyed by fire.
It is incredibly difficult to see a house with so much history suddenly gone. Over the years, Mrs. Russell’s House was not simply a building — it was a place where people gathered, celebrated, made memories and experienced a little piece of Eleuthera.
We are deeply grateful to the Governor’s Harbour Volunteer Fire Department and everyone who responded this weekend. They worked bravely and tirelessly to bring the fire under control and protect the surrounding properties and community.
To the firefighters and volunteers who answered the call: thank you. We are incredibly grateful for everything you did.
Today, we remember the house as it was — and the 150 years of stories that lived within its walls. So many wonderful stories have been shared with us about the memories made in this house — from the gardenias Mrs. Russell used to grow and share, to her famous soup, and of course, all the visitors who have made such wonderful Eleuthera memories there.
These are the things we will remember.
Rest peacefully, Mrs. Russell’s House. You will be missed. ❤️
