Privacy must be the ultimate luxury in this overpopulated world. That is what Botswana is best at: Being out in Africa the way it was made, and no other tourist around. None! We give you even your own private campsite. (This photo was taken in winter, when many of our trees lose their leaves as defence against the dry season.)

At least ten tons of fun in the water. These elephants weigh at least five tons each! It must be marvellous for them to suddenly become boyant in the waters of the Chobe, and their fun is infectious. I don't think anyone can watch them and not feel happy. And this sighting is just about guaranteed if you come on a safari to the pristine wildlife areas of Botswana.

There are about 23,000 wild lions in Africa - and we often meet some of them on our safaris. These queens of the jungle stole our hearts in the past month. (All ladies, because it's Women's Month in South Africa!)

Today is World Conservation Day.

Tourism is absolutely vital for the conservation of our wildlife and nature all over the world. In Africa this is the only way we will be able to save our dwindling wildlife and natural resources.

It is you, our visitors, that will ensure that we have the money to keep them safe, but please, be careful when you book your next holiday. Make sure that the safari lodge you book is ethical, some use conservation as a medium to advertise and to sell their product, but to them that is what wildlife is, just a product to ensure that their bank accounts are full.
Do some research, check if the lodges allow off-roading, following animals into bush away from dedicated roads. This destroys thousand of plants, small animals and insects.

It is up to us to ensure that our wilderness and our wildlife stays safe and preserved for our future generations.

Reason #1 to go on a safari. 21 June was Giraffe Day, and you can be sure to see these gentle giants on the African plains. They are the tallest animals that walk the earth, with legs alone taller than most humans. And they help us humans to spot predators. With fantastic eyesight, they are often the first to see a big cat and if a group of giraffes stare at one spot, so should you – there might be a lion or leopard lurking!

I have only admiration for elephants; I believe they embody everything that we hold as noble. The oldest, wisest female leads her herd to safety, water and feeding grounds; all the others learn from her experience and they all defer to her. They will defend their family with all their almighty strength, yet normally they are utterly gentle and kind. They mourn their dead, observing rituals over the bones of dead loved ones for years afterwards. All this is in my book My Journey with 1000 Bigfoots, and Yoda, my rescued bushbaby, finds it a fascinating read. As you can see! The book is available on Amazon.

Day 12
Karen Blixen luxury mobile safari:
March 24, 2022
Our last morning at Khwai, today we are heading south to the holiday town of Maun. Here we would rest and restock supplies for the last three days in the Central Kalahari Desert.
It was a bumpy road and, full of water holes and just in general in a bad condition.
It was only 146 km to Maun. But it took us almost the entire day. We stopped for lunch just before we exited at South Gate. On the way we had some beautiful elephant sightings with some of the biggest bulls I have seen in a long time.
In Maun we stopped for some shopping and left for our overnight stay at the lodge. Here we had some time to relax and have a nice shower, and to do some laundry, but that night it rained again and so the clothes were still wet the next morning.
Simon prepared us a very nice dinner, but the poor guy was in a state. There was only one stove plate working in the lodge’s communal kitchen. He had to prepare all the food on just that one plate, we nevertheless ended up having a wonderful 3-course dinner.
P**a, Simon.
