Picturesquely situated 100 km west of the Victoria Falls, overlooking the Chobe River and the Caprivi floodplains, the iconic Chobe Game Lodge is the only permanent safari lodge within the Chobe National Park. In addition, four exclusive suites have their own plunge pools and separate lounges.

The lilac-breasted roller is hard to miss among October’s colours—as if these birds know nothing of subtlety when it comes to garnering attention.

They climb steeply, then dive, roll (hence their name) and swish from side to side: an intentional soirée, it seems, to ensure a full view of the feathers so many of our guests adore.

Beneath the surface of the Chobe River, shoals of bream flicker through the shallows, catfish work the muddy bottom, and frogs plop from the reeds. It is this hidden flurry of life that draws wings of all kinds to the water’s edge.

A Pied Kingfisher hovers, waits, then drops. A Yellow-billed Stork stands patiently before driving its bill into the shallows. A cormorant settles onto a dry branch after its latest dive, while an African Skimmer flies low, slicing its bill through the water’s surface.

And then comes the call of an African Fish Eagle—a sound that, for many, lingers long after leaving the riverbanks of the Chobe.

Here, mornings begin quietly, hot chocolate already warm and waiting by the time the little ones are up. Game drives move gently, with room enough for questions, for pointing, and for the particular joy of spotting an elephant before anyone else does.
