A leopard doesn't need a spotlight 🐆

Finding a leopard in the African bush is often a game of patience.

Their spotted coats provide incredible camouflage, allowing them to disappear into grass, shrubs and shadows with surprising ease.

This is why experienced guides pay attention to the little things — tracks, alarm calls, unusual movements and even the behaviour of nearby animals.

And then suddenly…

There it is. 🐆

The Ghosts of Magotho 🌳

There is something hauntingly beautiful about the Dead Tree Island in Magotho.

Standing against the blue Botswana sky, these weathered trees may look lifeless — but in the bush, even a dead tree can be full of life.

Dead and fallen trees provide shelter, nesting sites and food for countless insects, birds and small creatures. They also become part of the landscape's natural cycle of decay and renewal.

So while the trees may have lost their leaves, they've certainly not lost their purpose.

Magotho has a way of reminding us that beauty doesn't always mean green. 🤎

Lions don't always roar 🦁

One of the biggest misconceptions about lions?

They don't spend their days roaring dramatically across the savanna.

A lot of the time, they're doing what this handsome fellow is doing…

Absolutely nothing. 😂

Lions spend a significant portion of their day resting, conserving energy for hunting and other activities.

And when the temperature rises, finding a shady patch of grass becomes a very sensible life choice.

On a Khwai game drive, seeing a lion relaxed in its natural surroundings is just as special as watching one on the move.

Zebra stripes & safari vibes 🦓

Why do zebras have stripes?

Scientists have proposed several explanations, including helping deter biting flies and possibly confusing predators when zebras move together.

But let's be honest…

They also look like they were dressed by Mother Nature with a very bold fashion sense. 😎

On a Khwai game drive, zebra are often seen moving through open woodland and grassland, sometimes alongside other plains game.

Black. White. Absolutely fabulous.

The leopard that almost wasn't there 🐆

Spotting a leopard in Khwai is often less about luck and more about knowing where to look.

This beautifully camouflaged cat can sit almost perfectly still while the surrounding grass and shadows do the disappearing act for it.

Our guides spend countless hours reading tracks, alarm calls, vegetation and animal behaviour — because apparently, "I saw something move" isn't quite specific enough. 😂

Khwai is one of those places where patience can reward you with an unforgettable sighting.

And sometimes… the leopard is watching you before you even realise it's there.
