Soulful corners of Kanana, designed to draw the Delta in from the comfort of your own room.

Situated on the Xudum River in the southwest of the Okavango Delta, Kanana sits within a private concession of islands strung with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn.

A quiet corner of the Delta, and one of its most diverse.

From a brown firefinch perched in the reeds to a leopard settled high in the canopy, a curious vervet monkey and two spotted hyenas holding the road, wildlife at Okuti shows up in every shape and size.

Year-round sightings, consistent and close, with the open waterways of the Okavango Delta never far away.

Dinner at Dinaka is served beneath the stars of the Kalahari.

In the heart of a 60-million-year-old biome, the fire is lit, the table is set and the night sky sets the scene. A dining experience as vast and unhurried as the desert itself.

Nature can be both brutal and beautiful.

Spotted at Dinaka, a tree that at first glance appeared almost decorated with butterflies, each one delicately skewered on a thorn. The artist behind this display? A shrike.

Known as the butcherbird, the shrike uses thorns as its tools, impaling insects, lizards and even small birds to secure its meal or store food for later.

The butterflies pictured, Plain Tigers, also known as the African Monarch, are highly toxic to most birds due to the poisonous compounds their caterpillars store from milkweed plants. The shrike, however, has found its way around this. It impales the butterfly and simply waits, sometimes for days, until the toxins break down and dry out before eating. When it does eat, it targets the head and abdomen, where toxin concentrations are lowest.

A fascinating phenomenon unfolding in the heart of the Kalahari.
