If you're joining us in September, here's what you could expect. 👇

Days are hot, up to 34 to 36°C, so plan your energy around the cooler hours. Mornings start closer to 16 or 17°C though, cold enough that you'll want a jacket on the early game drive before the sun catches up with you. ☀

The heat has an upside. It's pushed almost everything toward the river, so this is one of the best months of the year for sightings from the deck alone. Elephants especially, herds coming down to drink right in front of the lodge most afternoons. 🐘Keep an eye on the sky too, the carmine bee-eaters and yellow-billed kites are just arriving back for the season.

💡What to bring: light, breathable clothes in neutral colours for the day, something warm for early mornings and evenings, a hat, sunscreen and good walking shoes for the guided walks. Swimwear too, you'll want the pool by mid-afternoon.

Some afternoons you'll want company. Pull up a chair in the lounge, grab a drink from the bar and swap notes with whoever's back from the morning drive about what they saw and where. 🍻

Other afternoons, you just want some alone time. Retreat to your cottage, nap with no alarm set or sit on the deck and watch whatever's grazing below. 💛

This is a holiday where you get to set the pace.

Did You Know? 💡

Leopards can haul prey up to twice their own body weight straight up a tree trunk, sometimes carcasses over 100 lbs.

They do this to keep their kill away from lions, hyenas and other scavengers who can't climb. 🐾

It's basically the wild's version of hiding your leftovers on the top shelf of the fridge so nobody steals them.

Fun Fact 💡If you spot a jacana walking those lily pads with a chick close behind, that's dad on duty.

Female African jacanas mate with multiple males in a season and then leave the incubating and the raising to them entirely. One female can have several males on her territory, each running his own nest.

Next time you're watching one balance on those long toes, you're probably watching a single father. 😅

Sat in the grass as the sun came up and a line of elephants walked straight past us on their way into the morning light.

Although the camera got it, there are some moments that need to be experienced in real life. 👁️

At Muchenje, during your downtime you still have something to look at. The pool faces straight out over the floodplain, so you can be lying there with a book and a cocktail and still catch movement below,, elephants drinking, a herd crossing, birds coming and going.

Your safari experience doesn't stop just because you've stopped moving.

Get to know KB 👋

Meet Kabelo, though most people know him as KB, or Kabelensky if you have spent a bit longer with him.

He grew up in Tlokweng on the edge of Gaborone, a long way from the bush he works in now. The outdoors got hold of him early through Scouts, all those camping trips and survival skills and that pull was strong enough to take him to the Botswana Wildlife Training Institute to train as a guide. 🐾

Since then he has guided just about everywhere worth guiding in this country. Chobe, the Okavango Delta, Makgadikgadi, and mobile camping in between. All of that is why he is now Head Guide here at Muchenje. 💛

Chobe’s elephants are known for forming the largest herds of any elephant population on the continent.

It’s part of why sightings here rarely feel rare. You’ll spot them under trees, out on the floodplain and sometimes right from the deck.
