Eselbe Camp = Eco Camp

Camping is only one of the eco-friendly features we offer here at Eselbe. All our accommodation options are built with the means of reducing our impact on the environment as much as possible. We use natural materials and support upcycling in many ways. We especially like to work with (empty) beer bottles. 😜

Recently we also upgraded our solar system to produce even more clean electricity🌞and installed a UV & reverse osmosis water filter system for 💦 fresh & tasty drinking water 💦

Have you already tried our water or are you about to visit us? We are looking forward to hearing your thoughts about it. Cheers! 💦

Rainy season is chameleon season.

Like our guests, we are always amazed to see one of these (totally harmless) reptiles. They come in different species, in small size or a little bit bigger, greenish or whitish and for sure have some cool features:

1. Chameleons can swivel its eyes in two directions simultaneously, but in the night, they are nearly blind. Maybe that comes with the ability to see the past and the future at the same time!?
2. They have five toes on their feet - two that point in one direction and three in the other.
3. The smaller the chameleon the faster its telescopic tongue is shooting out when catching prey.
4. Chameleons are known to sway back and forth, it almost looks like they are dancing.
5. Often misunderstood: Chameleons actually don’t change their colour to camouflage but to show their mood, communicate or regulate their body temperature.

In the camp we mainly find them in the trees. Nevertheless, sometimes you may also find them in your bathroom or just passing by on the ground, dancing from one tree to another ...

Did you ever wonder why our logo shows a dragonfly?

Right, dragonflies are simply beautiful and don’t sting. And although these are already quite good reasons to make these beautiful insects our symbol there is more to it:

During its astonishing life cycle, it undergoes a long-lasting metamorphosis. After hatching from an egg, a nymph lives in the water for some years, molts itself several times and becomes finally an adult dragonfly with beautiful wings. Due to this transformation process they symbolize a healthy environment and, in a lot of cultures, they are a seen as a good omen. Watch out for them, if a dragonfly lands on your head it means good luck - make a wish and it may just come true.

For us, this makes the dragonfly the perfect fit for Eselbe Camp. We constantly change and improve our camp, try to reduce our impact on the environment as much as possible and consequently transform Eselbe into the beautiful place we dreamt of.

Stay with us, enjoy the tranquil surroundings and relax in the hammock while a bunch of dragonflies is swirling around your head.

“Nice retreat from being on the road.”

Recently we met Haedon from Oregon, USA. He is traveling around Southern Africa on his motorbike and checked in into our Camp for some nights.

Motor bikers (and cyclists) cannot enjoy the comfortable shelter an overlanding car is providing, especially not in our rainy season. That’s why they might have different expectations and needs in terms of accommodation and facilities.

To find out more, we took the opportunity and had a little chat with Haedon.

In a need of a nice place to dry up, rest and socialize after some hours on the road, Haedon said he has been happy to find very convenient amenities at Eselbe Camp: Hot showers, a well-equipped community kitchen and a big dining table as well as relaxing couches and a comfy hammock. Furthermore, he really liked that “the layout of the camp fasters a good social atmosphere”.

This exactly matches our intention and we are proud to see that our guests enjoy the camp’s set-up & atmosphere.

Being asked what advice he had to give to other bikers, Haedon answered: “Pack as lite as possible, try to bring as few things as possible. Panniers, phone charger, navigation system, GPS or phone mount. Keeping focus on the road. My attention is my most valuable asset.”

Well said, Haedon. Thank you and keep riding!

Christmas time is family time!

At Eselbe Camp we are celebrating Christmas as a family with our guests. We are amazed by the fact that they choose to spend those special days of the year with us. Thus, we will try to make it special for them (and us) and tick of as many items from our Christmas-Bucketlist as possible:

😍 cook ♡ eat ♡ drink ♡ nap in the hammock ♡ and probably eat & drink some more😍

We also would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every single one of you, for choosing us, complimenting us with fabulous reviews and especially for being such amazing guests. THANK YOU! 🙏🏽

We wish you and your loved ones a merry Christmas and for the New Year lots of breath-taking adventures and new experiences. We are looking forward to hear about them!

We are excited: Four new guests arrived today. Although we are fully booked, they were granted a very special VIP accommodation as they will contribute to our community of travellers with (hopefully) fresh eggs every morning.
Looking forward to our first 🥚.

We love our eggs fried 🍳 or scrambled. And you?

SHADOW AS A COMMODITY

Craving for the sun if you live in Europe can turn into craving for a shade if you visit Botswana.
What if there are not enough trees in the area? Well, you build roofs or shields. Otherwise you will be woken up to the heat very early, if you sleep in the tent or a campervan.
If you have ever slept in a tent, you know exactly, how precious the shade is, right?
