Lions are famously not fans of water. With this year’s Delta floods at a decade’s high, this pride of Tau were seen waiting at the Xigera boat station, convinced a lift was on the way…

Lodge Manager Quest Maundo wasn’t having it. After a lengthy wait and a few unhappy stares in his direction, they gave up and swam the chilly stream.

Pattern, colour, symbolism – the distinctive cabinets in each of our guest suites were made especially for Xigera by South African studio Dokter and Misses. Globally reknown for their innovative designs, husband and wife Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin were inspired by the hand-painted architecture of the Kassena people in West Africa. The cabinets’ sculpted volumes echo the monolithic shapes of these unusual buildings, and are wrapped in geometric patterns reminiscent of their surface details.

This talented duo have exhibited their work at leading museums such as the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York and VITRA Design Museum in Germany, and continue to make their impact felt around the world.

A visit from one of the Delta's most charismatic birds - the Crested Barbet, whose speckled plumage and vivid colouring is a reminder that in the wild, nature rarely favours subtlety. Equal parts elegant and eccentric, these stocky little birds bring unmistakable character to the Okavango during flood season.

At Xigera, moments like these are elevated by the expertise of guides who read the floodplain like a living map, drawing your attention not only to the obvious sightings, but to the subtle exchanges unfolding around you.
