Know what you're getting into and you'll have a 10/10 experience. We will be back!
I've been to 60+ countries and our trip to Itza was one of my favorite trips I've EVER been on. That being said, you need to go in knowing what you are getting. If you have expectations that the hotel is very close to the airport or you're going to be at a 5 star hotel, you are going to be disappointed. But if you want to unplug, dive the best dive sites and have amazing food and support kind/hardworking people, you're coming to the right place.
I did 19 dives the week we were there! We saw everything we could have hoped to see - rays, sharks, turtles, lobsters, countless kinds of fish, octopus, etc. Found amazing conch shells all over the island. Loved each and every member of the staff - they are a little shy at first but by the end you will love them.
If you know and are good with the following things, you will have an amazing time like we did. With this information in mind, I would recommend this resort to anyone. I don't think you can get better diving in Belize!
Things to know:
- It is a long boat ride (that can be bumpy) to get to the resort. This is worth it because once you get to the resort, you are going to be a 1-5 minute boat ride from AMAZING dive sites! To us, this was worth it instead of having to take a long boat ride every time we wanted to dive.
- There is no hot water (but you can ask them to heat up some water in a bucket from the kitchen after a night dive!)
- The toilets are stinky as they are composting toilets. This is an ECO lodge - know what you are getting into. Plug your nose while you go to the bathroom - it's not a big deal.
- Elvis is sarcastic! You'll learn this quickly - it's his personality. Despite being sarcastic, he is extremely experienced, safety is top of mind, he is very observant, and he will do whatever he can to make sure you have the experience you want to have. (We love you Elvis!)
- There really isn't anything to do on the island other than read and relax. The website says there are bikes but there really aren't. You can walk around the island a little but there isn't a lot to see. Bring books or your kindle. Or take a nap in a hammock :) The beach isn't good for swimming by the resort as it's in the mangrove, but you won't really want to swim anyways since you have been out diving/swimming.
