Before it became The Great House Inn, this magnificent building was a family home—and its story began nearly 100 years ago, in 1927.

From its construction for Mr. & Mrs. Barney Melhado, to its years with the Belize Estate and Produce Company, and eventually becoming part of the Maestre's family legacy, the house has continued to
evolve while preserving its character and history.

When Steve Maestre decided to venture into business for himself, he embraced both the risks and the rewards that came with pursuing his own vision. With a deep connection to his family home, Steve transformed the property into a hotel, preserving its character while giving it a new purpose.

He began this ambitious journey with little more than a Bristol board and a pencil. He carefully sketched the floor plans for each room, turning his ideas into a tangible vision. One of the most remarkable aspects of the transformation was raising the home 5½ feet higher, creating the foundation for what would become The Great House Inn.

In February 1998, as part of a major refurbishment project, the property underwent further development to create new business opportunities, including additional shopping and office space, as well as a restaurant space.

Today, The Great House Inn features 16 uniquely designed rooms, inviting guests to experience the authentic charm, character, and colonial architecture that make the property a distinctive part of Belize's history.
