Michael “Mike” Heusner, a well-known figure in the country’s tourism and sportfishing sectors has passed away.
His lifelong advocacy helped shape Belize’s reputation as a premier marine destination. Heusner was widely respected for his contribution to the development of sustainable tourism, particularly within the sportfishing industry.
He consistently promoted practices that balanced economic opportunity with environmental protection, emphasizing that Belize’s marine resources were not only a national treasure but a foundation for long-term livelihoods.
Over the years, Heusner became a strong and influential voice in national discussions on marine conservation. He was especially recognized for his advocacy in protecting key sportfishing species and opposing destructive fishing practices, including the use of gillnets, which he argued threatened both biodiversity and the future of fishing-based tourism. In recognition of his efforts,
Oceana Belize honored Heusner as its 2018 Ocean Hero, citing his unwavering commitment to safeguarding Belize’s marine ecosystems and his willingness to speak out in defense of the sea. Oceana described him as a passionate advocate whose legacy will continue to inspire conservation efforts nationwide.
