This is the isthmus, the narrowest section of the Placencia Peninsula, where the Caribbean Sea and lagoon side are separated by only a thin strip of land.

And this is only the beginning.

Over the next few weeks we will continue adding places, improving information, expanding maps, adding events, strengthening local recommendations, and teaching Ask Visit Placencia more about the peninsula.

Not every Belize road trip is about the destination.

Sometimes it is the everyday scenes along the way that tell the story best.

Agriculture is still very much part of the landscape and economy down south, and scenes like this are a reminder that there is a whole Belize beyond the beaches, resorts and cayes.

A trip inland brings you face to face with places like Xunantunich, where the scale of Belizeโ€™s Maya heritage is difficult to appreciate until youโ€™re standing right there beside it.

My sister Renee taking it all in during one of our visits to Xunantunich in the Cayo District.

If youโ€™re visiting Placencia, make some time to experience Belize beyond the peninsula too. The Caribbean coast may bring you here, but it is only one part of the story.
