👑🐀 The Scandal Behind the “Royal Rat”

If you see “Royal Rat” on a chalkboard menu in Belize, don’t keep walking—pull over. You’re about to eat like a Queen.

Back in 1985, when Queen Elizabeth II visited Belize, she was served a local delicacy called the gibnut.

It’s a large, nocturnal forest animal, with meat that tastes somewhere between pork and rabbit.

When British tabloids picked up the story that the Queen had eaten “rat,” they had a field day with it.

Belize? Not so much.

Locals leaned into the joke—and ever since, the gibnut has been affectionately known as the “Royal Rat.”

The Real Deal:

You haven’t really experienced Belizean food until you’ve tried it stewed in recado with rice and beans.

But a few things to know:
• It’s protected under the Belize Wildlife Protection Act
• Hunting is seasonal (usually closed Jan–May)
• You won’t find it everywhere year-round
• Expect to pay around $12–$18 BZD
